Description

Applied epistemology is also used in evaluating philosophical issues. This is the case when empirical perspective is applied to test philosophical theories. [35] While this approach does not eliminate analytic and conceptual issues, it can make them clearer. [35] It also increases the probability of theorists to examine evidences that tend to be overlooked. [35] Cybernetics [ edit ] Further research in this vein could be seen as an application of epistemological theory (i.e., applied epistemology), but also as a way in which findings from information studies can contribute to theorization in other disciplines. It may be useful, for example, to delineate a taxonomy of ontic understandings—such as distinguishing understanding matters of taste versus matters of fact. Similarly, is it possible to discern a framework of misunderstanding and other quasi-understandings based on the concepts of mis- and disinformation ( Fox, 1983)? Discussing these issues would certainly be useful for information professionals, who must deal with infelicitous epistemic states as a rule, and they may find interest in other academic disciplines as well. While applied epistemology has been neglected for much of the twentieth century, it has seen emerging interest in recent years, with key thinkers in the field helping to put it on the philosophical map. Although it is an old tradition, current technological and social developments have dramatically changed both the questions it faces and the methodology required to answer those questions. Recent developments also make it a particularly important and exciting area for research and teaching in the twenty-first century. The Routledge Handbook of Applied Epistemology is an outstanding reference source to this exciting subject and the first collection of its kind. Comprising entries by a team of international contributors, the Handbook is divided intosix main parts: the efficiency of a practice is how well it limits the cost of getting true answers (Thagard 1997: 247). Overlooking Welton is Elloughton Hill, used by the Royal Observatory Corps in WWII (the Port of St Ellen on the Island of Islay was also a ROC post). The place-name dictionary refers to Elloughton (Elgendon in 1086) as 'the place of Helgi'; 'Eller's dun' as per nearby Ellerker and West Ella seems far more likely. a b Battersby, Mark E. (1989). There is significant contention about the concept of information in information studies, with some scholars preferring the concept of document to overcome conceptual limitations of information ( Ørom, 2007), and others suggesting that information is unnecessary considering that information studies is truly concerned with human activities, unstructured data, measurements, conceptual schema or human valorisation, depending on the sub-discipline in question ( Furner, 2004). Still, many insist that the concept of information is necessary and there has been more discussion of information than of any of the other epistemic concepts surveyed here. All this furnishes deeper conceptual understanding to both those who adopt and those who reject operationalizing information as a concept. the power of a practice is measured by its ability to help cognizers find true answers to the questions that interest them;

Further, Elgin ( 2002) argues that epistemologists should consider pictorial art, as art often challenges assumptions and furthers inquiry in other fields. Elgin ( 2002) suggests that, while art may not always contribute to knowledge, it is epistemically valuable in that it contributes to ontic understanding. Briesen ( 2014) takes this further. Briesen posits that, as ontic understanding involves constructing mental models, pictorial art must be able to contribute to these models via chains of reference. To construct this account, Briesen draws from Goodman's ( 1976) philosophy of symbol systems. Goodman offers a robust account of how artworks can be conceptualized as semantically and syntactically dense and replete systems which allow humans to trace chains of reference. Thus, as Elgin ( 2002) argues, artwork can facilitate understanding by triggering new perspectives.
