Description

Re-read via the HighBridge audiobook edition, released simultaneously with the original Mysterious Press hardcover (January 2017)

FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence Harold Harper ( John Lithgow) is called to apprehend Chase because of their complicated past during the Soviet–Afghan War. Working alongside Harper are his protégés: FBI agent Angela Adams ( Alia Shawkat); CIA officer Raymond Waters ( E. J. Bonilla); and Julian Carson ( Gbenga Akinnagbe), a hit-man hired by Harper to kill Chase. The characters' conscience seems to have been thrown out the window, because killing people becomes just a minor deficiency of their trip and is dismissed as unimportant. They never panic - they don't even scare at the sight of human bodies and they're as comfortable when disposing of them as a 50 year old experienced Russian mercenary. Meanwhile, a young man with a disreputable appearance comes in, and needs to use the toilet. Badly. But his luggage won’t fit into the cubicle. Undecided, he hops around a bit, and then, assuming that the old man will be no trouble, he rudely demands that Allan look after his hefty suitcase. Allan has no time to respond, but just continues to sit and wait until the bus comes in. He looks at the suitcase, considering. Now, that suitcase might have useful things in like clothes, thinks Allan. After all, this was hardly a planned journey and he came out in his carpet slippers. So he simply takes the handle of the suitcase, and trundles on to the bus, pulling the suitcase behind him. If you've already enjoyed the book, I'd like to recommend the movie DVD/Blu Ray, which I watched today. When I started writing, I always told myself I’d never write a series. I wanted to write the best novels I could, and very few great novels were anything but standalone books. That went fine until I finished Vanishing Act, about Jane Whitefield, a half-Seneca woman who takes in people who have reason to believe they’re about to be murdered and makes them disappear. I’d finished the book, but I knew much more about the character that I still wanted to say, so I started a sequel, and the series was launched. I also found that from time to time I get curious about the protagonist of The Butcher’s Boy, my first novel, so after 10 years I wrote a sequel, and after 30, I got curious about him again. A series allows a writer to exercise these urges to revisit a character. But standalone books give him a chance to free his imagination to find and invent new ones. The Old Man centers on Dan Chase, who absconded from the CIA decades ago and has been living off the grid since. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past. Connellan, Shannon; Haysom, Sam (June 25, 2022). stars. David Chase is a 60 year old widower. He spends his days reading and walking the dogs. But most 60 year olds don't have multiple drivers licenses, their savings in banks across the country and 2 Beretta Nanos in his spare bedroom cupboard. Ha ha...people drink vodka! Ha ha! A man who doesn't like politics meets every important political leader over 5 decades...ha ha! Religion and politics are dumb. Guffaw guffaw. This article about a thriller novel of the 2010s is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it. Jeff Bridges stars as Dan Chase in The Old Man. This is the first role that the Oscar-winning actor has taken on, TV or movie, since 2018, with his last role in Bad Times at the El Royale. In 2020, Bridges shared that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma but was in remission as of 2021 and told People this year that he feels "terrific."The story shifts to full thriller mode as Daniel & Zoe flee across the country, followed by Julian & a group of shadowy men. We know the military is behind the manhunt but it’s not immediately clear why or if they’re working alone. Gradually we (and Daniel) learn the real reason he’s a wanted man after more than 3 decades. And it certainly begins well enough. Allan Karlsson, a resident of a retirement home in Malmköping, is one hundred years old, and the director Alice has decided to throw him a party. Everyone will be there; even the Lord Mayor has been invited. Sounds good, yes? But Allan couldn’t care less. In fact the thought of merrymakers in an old folks’ home is definitely not his cup of tea. So … well you know what happens next don’t you? In the end, I walked away with a smile and will forever do so when I see this book on my shelves. It made me laugh at the world. For today it is okay. Tomorrow is another day.

For starters, this book is absurd. And not absurd in the fictional way, not fantasy-absurd. No. Real absurd. There's nothing plausible about this work. I know, after reading it, that it was probably meant to be absurd and that in general fiction is supposed to touch on situations that might not be real, but Jonasson went out of his way to make this one really test your patience! And, frankly, it does just that - it doesn't appeal to your imagination, rather it punches your endurance right in the face and yells at her until you finally decide you've had enough. Now, don't bust my balls over this. Fiction - I do know - is not real. But at least with good fiction, the author tries to make it as plausible as possible. In here, the absurdity was multiplied by the horrifying sense of humor that the author seemed to enjoy.

The age of our main action hero, if we can call him that, adds a more contemplative angle, too. Chase hasn’t been actively on the run for decades, and everything is different now. He makes mistakes. When he first “disappeared”, the technology that the FBI has now could barely have been imagined. “Starting again, it seems so much harder than I remember,” he says; it’s certainly true that it takes more to vanish these days than a fake ID, a facility with firearms and an ability to lie. The police have no knowledge of the money and are only looking for Allan, who is known to be somewhat absent-minded. He gets caught up in criminal activity by accident and ends up, unknown to him, being hunted by both the police and a gang of murderous criminals. The two decide to play off both sides, and concoct intelligence reports which will please everyone. Their reports result in Richard Nixon visiting Leonid Brezhnev, but also mean that both sides increase their spending on nuclear deterrents. When the Soviet Union begins to collapse, Allan decides to return to Sweden, and live a peaceful life. The saga continues, and the book does not really have a conclusion. The 100-year-old Allan and his friends fly to Indonesia, where they spend time at a luxury hotel managed by Amanda and her sons. Allen is approached by a representative of the Indonesian government, interested in Allan’s ability to make an atomic bomb, and Allan agrees to help. Disney Nordic and Studiocanal are releasing a film at Christmas. Everyone but me, it seems, loves the thing:
