Hobb drew the geography of the Six Duchies from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, where she and her husband lived for many years. She wove in the concept of “the Wit”, a vilified “beast magic”. And a character who had been a walk-on part, the mysterious, enigmatically gendered Fool, sidled on to centre stage, helping to turn Assassin’s Apprentice into something different from the usual swords and sorcery fantasy. If you’re naming a video game character, this would be super cool to do if you have the ability to alter the appearance of your character to look a bit more like the famous fictional assassin. On top of that, fans said that the story was a delight for fans of Tolkien’s works. Whether it was the elves, dwarves or shadowy evil, these readers enjoyed how the book placed a modern spin on several of their favorite classic fantasy elements. It makes it a lot easier to find what you’re looking for, even if the name you eventually find isn’t on the list. Sanderson raises many important questions through the protagonist and lets her grow as she comes to her own conclusions. There's an exploration of class, religion, moral ambiguity, and, most importantly, trust. Rather just presenting a story of powerless to powerful, the author explores how one so exploited can come to form meaningful relationships. Half-elf Jie may not appear much of a threat, but woe to any who find themselves on the wrong side of her daggers!
