Description

When George gets ‘found out’ he feels very guilty, in the same way a young child would and then he gets the chance to make things better. Howlingly funny, its luridly elegant illustrations will be in frequent demand; ideal for parents and grandparents to read aloud. And his owner, Harry, has all the best hopes that George will be a well-behaved dog when he leaves him alone for the day.

Inevitably George consumes the entire cake and the book continues with the scenarios of George seeing a cat and lovely soil. This book at first appears to be a simple story of a dog being left at home, but it is so much more than that as the reader gets pulled into George’s emotions of excitement, deliberation, naughtiness, and remorse. We read Oh No George by Chris Haughton in a PGCE English lesson and we all loved the rhythmic writing and the repetition used in the story. The degree to which a particular child succeeds in this transition correlates closely with this child’s readiness for the rule-following and socialization that are central to being a participant in school. George promises Harrison that he's going to be good, but then George spots a cake, and George loves cake, what will he do?

You can also watch our Storytime playlist on YouTube read by the likes of Ore Oduba, Adam Buxton, Fearne Cotton and many more. This book offers questions about what George might do and on the next page direct answers aren't given. Kids will relate to this dog who has every intention of being good, but just can't help himself when tempted. Oh No George' came out in March 2012 and has been nominated for 6 awards in 4 countries including the Roald Dahl Funny award. At first I found the illustrations a little basic, I wasn't too keen on the computer generated graphic feel of it, but it's grown on me and the pictures and story work really well together. Not only is it entertaining and a very beautiful book, it has been invaluable in instituting boundaries with him in a humorous way - I jus.

The book tells the story of a dog named George who continually disobeys his owner Harris who asked him to be good before he left him on his own for the day. George, the hero of this dog-behaving-badly story from Haughton (LITTLE OWL LOST), hits the canine trifecta: oversize snout, floppy ears, and an anguished expression. This illustrations are simple but "funny as all get out", and I fell I love with the expressions on George's face! The subject to which George is about to approach is illustrated in full block colour whilst the scenery around it is thin and linear.

George said he'd be good and he wants to be good, but being good is tricky when there are so many fun temptations to be found when you're alone in the house. Little Owl falls asleep in his (rather precarious) nest, falls onto the ground with a 'bump' and becomes 'a bit lost'. At three, children can often follow slightly longer stories but they'll still want to hear their old favourites again and again. Freedom is secured not by the fulfilling of one’s desires but by the removal of desire…No man is free who is not master of himself.
