Though the smallest of the new bunch out of AMD, the eight-core 7800X3D will prove to be an interesting new addition to the firm’s ever-growing 7000 series lineup. But what is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D release date? If you compare its power consumption with its performance, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D may well produce the best performance-per-watt ratio of any processor we’ve tested, though it would certainly be a close call with some like the Ryzen 9 7900 also performing impressively here. This is one area that AMD has a notable advantage over Intel, though energy efficiency doesn’t often drive many purchasing decisions. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a gaming-focused processor, and there’s no contest in that regard. It’s the fastest gaming CPU you can buy, matching and sometimes even outperforming the more expensive Ryzen 9 7950X3D. You lose a lot in productivity performance, but for gamers, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is still plenty fast. In any case, these chips will be sure to provide some new qualities in performance and pricing. It’s unclear as of yet how the chips will size up to Intel’s own options, but the firm has remained relatively consumer-facing in its approach to new chip and so all being well they’ll be a competitive option. What is the maximum RAM speed for 7800X3D? Finally, I took all of the datapoints I'd gathered and compared the average scores of each processor tested for this review against its retail price, current as of this review, to measure how good of a value this processor is or isn't.

That said, if this data was vital to the review we would have included it, but realistically most people considering the 7800X3D are after a more no-compromise type gaming experience and therefore will likely be considering high-end CPUs offering maximum performance... As for power usage, officially the 7800X3D has a TDP of 120W, but it didn't even come close to this in my testing, often using a full third less power than it's rated for. Once official drivers get updated after this chip launches, I expect there to be more utilization of the available power potential, but it might not be much more and honestly, it doesn't need it. Still, there are some things we can infer just from the little information we have currently. At CES 2023 AMD did provide an initial February launch window, and also availability of the specs for the three chips: In this review we're testing AMD's new Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which is the company's latest gaming monster based on the 3D Vertical Cache technology. It features an 8-core Zen 4 CCD with high frequencies, and should be able to provide a generational gaming performance uplift, letting AMD surpass even the fastest of Intel's 13th Gen Core Raptor Lake processors at gaming. For the bulk of gamers and e-sports athletes that aren't big on "gaming++" workloads such as streaming, heavy video processing, and live social media; and just need a processor for maxed out AAA gaming at the highest resolutions, with the fastest graphics cards available, the 7800X3D is supposed to be their knight in shining armor.

Even so, the 7800X3D is 9% faster than the 13900K and remember the Core i9 processor has been paired with DDR5-7200 memory which does help in this bandwidth-sensitive game. Hitman 3 doesn't run particularly well on Zen 4 processors, at least relative to Intel Raptor Lake CPUs. The 7800X3D is just 4% faster than the 7700X and that means it's 11% slower than the 13900K and 8% slower than the 13700K. In addition to synthetic tests, I used this processor as my main gaming chip for a few days to informally measure real world performance, while noting any games where performance was particularly exceptional in either direction.

Language

The 7800X3D is impressive when it comes to power consumption. For example, the 13600K was 11% faster here, but for that extra performance we saw a whopping 52% increase in total system power consumption. Having extra cache certainly can improve performance, though. One of the most commonly known things about computers is that more RAM can help your PC work faster, and cache is in many ways no different from RAM. Though both are essential, and having more is often beneficial, having too much of either can be detrimental, or at least accrue no additional benefit. Higher-capacity RAM kits often run at slower speeds, and the overabundance of cache on the Ryzen 7 7800X3D forces it to run at slower speeds, too.

And we now know that the Ryzen 7 7800X3D will arrive on April 6. That’s after the arrival of the two Ryzen 9 chips, the 7950X3D, and the 7900X3D. Even though we did run into a snag in our testing due to a driver anomaly that we reported to AMD, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D should benefit from the simplicity of a single compute chiplet design. ( Update 4/16/2023: These chips are now at retail for roughly two weeks, but we haven't heard of any reports of this issue, which is a positive sign.)Simply put, AMD's Ryzen 7 7800X3D fails to fill much of a niche. If you are after a fast processor in terms of pure CPU grunt, you’d be better off with almost any other chip shown in the charts above. Almost all of them are faster, and many of them are cheaper, too. Naturally, this means the Ryzen 7 7800X3D also doesn’t make sense as a budget option. The one area where the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a hint of success is in the gaming market, but it's walking a thin line there. AMD provided us with data that clearly shows the Ryzen 7 7800X3D can perform better than the Intel Core i9-13900K or the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X when all three are paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090. Matching the Ryzen 7 7800X3D up against the formidable Intel Core i9-13900K, and you get a lower-tier processor that can get as many as 281 more fps in CS:GO, making the 7800X3D a very compelling chip for esports players on a more limited budget.

I am actually quite surprised by how closely the AMD supplied benchmark results were to the results for the same games in the review. Then when running the single core test, we saw a sustained frequency of 5 GHz, so just a 200 MHz increase over the all core. The peak operating temperature also dropped to 66c. BenchmarksNext up we have Hogwarts Legacy with ray tracing enabled and here the 7800X3D does quite well, edging out the 13900K by a 3% margin, so performance overall is much the same between these two CPUs. There was some speculation that AMD released the Ryzen 9 7950X3D first because the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which is about half the price, is just as fast in games. My testing lends some credibility to that assumption. In nearly all games, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is just as fast, and in some games, it’s even faster.
