Try mixing in 1/3 Pure Naturals (the /0 shades) too, which will increase grey coverage.Give your client a reverse balayage by adding lowlight panels to their hair in a dark brown shade. Your goal is to cover most of their lighter brown but leave a few ribbons free as highlights. You can do this with demi-permanent Color Touch, semi-permanent Color Fresh, or permanent Koleston Perfect or Illumina Color, depending on the finish they crave.

Keep it low-commitment for these clients with a demi-permanent product, like Color Touch, which you can use to add mocha lowlights to natural or highlighted blondes. Some of our favorite choco-coffee shades include 5/3, 6/0 and 6/35. For permanent color, you could also try Illumina Color 9/7 or Koleston Perfect 8/73. Apply as a root shadow and sweep through the lengths to bring dimension to a warm-toned blonde. 2. Stroke Mocha Highlights Through Brown Hair This is the classic root coverage, designed to disguise grey regrowth coming through. Try it with Koleston Perfect for 100% coverage, Koleston Perfect Intense Naturals for 100%, opaque coverage or Illumina Color to achieve 100%, translucent coverage. 2. Express Touch-Up After lifting their hair to the correct underlying tone – no more than two shades lighter than the base – rinse out the Freelights, and tone with a cool or caramel brown that matches the depth of the highlights. You could then finish their colour with a root-to-tip glossing or glazing service, which will not only enhance your client’s base, but also help to blend the balayage. If They Have Medium or Light Brown Hair: Your clients need to wash their hair thoroughly first to rid strands of any residue. Recommend they use a colour-kind formula, like the INVIGO Color Brilliance Color Protection Shampoo. While a demi-permanent or semi-permanent hair color can be applied to any level of grey, it’s often used to camouflage early greys, giving 30-70% coverage. The benefits of going semi- or demi-permanent are threefold: it provides a rich, true-to-tone finish, it fades beautifully, and it doesn’t leave a harsh demarcation line when roots grow out. 2. Permanent ColourYou should always apply color to the most stubborn grey hairs first. As they’re more resistant to color, they’ll benefit from the extra development time. For up to 30% grey: Find a shade that matches your client’s mid-lengths or the darkest part of their regrowth, and add Welloxon Perfect 6%. This should be enough to disguise wispy greys through the temples and roots. Wear gloves. For medium length and textures, use approximately 30g.
