This was very different from the author's first novel, Those Across the River. It's so different in style and pacing and plot that I would never have guessed that the same person wrote them if I didn't know better. It's the same horror/historical fiction genre bender, although where Those Across the River was a slow, steady build to a final conflagration, this followed the more cyclical style of most quests. Build, action, lull. Build, action, lull. There were brief bouts of horror that left me breathless and a little traumatized, then a short breather, and then once more into the breach. Heel–Face Turn: Blink and you'll miss it, but during the final battle, two angels wrestle a demon into the river, desperately shouting in its ears. Three angels come out of the river. A lifelong fan of renaissance festivals, Buehlman developed an act called “Christophe the Insultor,” [3] roasting fair-goers for money at the behest of their friends, and has been touring with this act for 25 years. Early in his career the material was period and PG-13, performed in the lanes, but as the act moved on stage and into festival taverns it got bluer, more modern, and wilder, and has a strong cult following—most of his 18,000 Facebook followers have personally seen his show. He has also written and performed a one-man show about Christopher Marlowe, written a festival stage show called The Bastard Monks, and still performs his shows Filthy Irish Stories and Fat Shakespeare for the Sterling Renaissance Festival in the summer. Wham Line: The fifth and final section of the book is prefaced by one single line: "And the Lord made answer."

Okay, she asks the men to help her bury her father and during an interesting turn of events, the girl winds up alone with Thomas who she credits for saving her life and sparing her from being violated, but like I said, he is a disgraced knight and he is pretty broken down; his countenance and self-worth is very low. The dialogue between Thomas and the girl won me over immediately. It's funny, heartwarming, endearing...it is here, in the first few chapters, I fell head over heels in love with Thomas the Knight. He is now a forever favorite character who lives in my reader's heart. For me, this story is really about him. THANK YOU CHRISTOPHER BUEHLMAN AND ACE BOOKS. I've already added his first novel Those Across the River to my to-read list.Thomas was lying in a cow field, holding up his sword, dressed in his rusty armor. Neither his arm nor his rib nor his jaw were broken. A rusted plow stood where the lion-devil had been, one of its spars hanging at the angle of the axe it had just been holding. A dead sheep lay in exactly the position the corpse of Sir Théobald had assumed when he collapsed. A small Norman tower, long abandoned and crumbling, stood where the mighty castle had bee Doom Magnet: As more and more of Delphine's strange nature comes to the fore, the harder the fallen angels try to eliminate her, leading them to send servants to try and kill her outright or manipulate her two companions into doing it for them. At some point, Christopher offered to send me a signed copy of Between Two Fires and I accepted this generous offer. When it arrived, the cover gave me this low-fantasy, medieval, "Game of Thrones" vibe (and I love that when I'm in the right mood, but I wasn't). No Periods, Period: Averted. Delphine wakes up one morning with blood on her clothes. It's initially feared that she was raped, but it turns out to both her relief and amusement, that she just experienced her first bleeding. Earn Your Happy Ending: Thomas and Delphine are both brutally slain by the Princes of Hell during the climax, and Thomas actually goes to Hell where his soul is tormented for what seems like years. Eventually, Delphine's divine aspect reaches him there, and with the implication that Heaven is finally winning the war she resurrects him only a day after he was killed. Delphine's mortal aspect, meanwhile, wakes up in her dead parents' farm exactly a year after she first met Thomas with no memory of prior events. The two eventually reconnect and Thomas raises her as his daughter, and they both live more or less Happily Ever After as a monk and nun respectively. Thomas's son inherits his lands and his wife lives peacefully to old age, although she never stops missing Thomas. They reconcile but can't be together. The author’s touch in making the holy obscene is hair-raising. Even though it is apparent that Delphine probably constitutes some kind of heavenly response to the crisis, the forces opposing her seem truly mighty. Allies for the trio appear but rarely, and are generally starving, disease-ridden, with little power to assist them and a tendency to die horribly and soon. Messianic Archetype: Delphine. Not only does she ultimately die to save humanity from the ravages of the plague and Hell's machinations, but she's strongly implied to functionally be Christ. Walkuski, Eric (December 5, 2011). "Paranormal Activity 2 director Tod Williams looks for Those Across The River". JoBlo.com . Retrieved 2016-08-03.It's not often that I pull a three-lolcat review, but, this book was epic and deserves all the lolcats in the world to describe its awesomeness. I rarely type in all capital letters, but let's face it, the book was... I think Christopher Buehlman really shines in character development and this book was another great example of that. I Warned You: This is more or less Delphine's reaction when Thomas escapes from the seemingly prosperous castle that she refused to go into on account of being a gathering of demons. When he awakens, she gives him a curt "Are you ready to go to Paris now?" To which he responds with "Yes."

Thomas: Sounds like you've never met a baby. Many of them are awful. I knew one in Picardy who stole his father's money and crawled down the road to the whorehouse. Meaningful Name: Crossed with Ironic Name: Chretien d'Evreux's first and last names mean "follower of Christ" and "brave strong boar" respectively, when he's a cowardly usurper who leveraged the Church's rites to depose of a more virtuous rival. More appropriately, his first name is also the origin of the derogatory term "cretin."Demon Lords and Archdevils: The main antagonists of the story are Bel-Phegor, Ra'um and Baal'Zebuth, each Princes of Hell tasked by Lucifer to conquer the earth in his name.
