Levy, Janey (September 1, 2008). Tattoos in Modern Society. The Rosen Publishing Group. p.47. ISBN 978-1-4042-1829-1 . Retrieved August 13, 2012. Sailor Jerry Ltd. produces a 92-proof spiced "navy rum" featuring a quintessential Sailor Jerry hula girl on the label. As the bottle is emptied, additional pin-up girls designed by Sailor Jerry are visible on the inner side of the label. The rum is distilled in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It takes its influence from Caribbean rum, which sailors would spice with flavors from the Far East and Asia. In 2010, the 40% ABV formula being sold in the United Kingdom was changed to include a less sweet taste in a move that was described as more "vanilla and caramel flavors". [12] It should also be considered that for your money you are also getting a 40% ABV rum. Whilst personally I don’t think there is a great deal of difference between a rum at 37.5 and 40% ABV, it does again suggest that there is an element of care and attention that has went into this rum. The producers aren’t looking to cut corners (and price) by bottling at a slightly lesser ABV. A lot of spiced rums come in at 35% ABV. After one sip you'll see why Sailor Jerry is unique. Vanilla hits your nose first and after a couple of sniffs, and you'll notice dry buttery toffee and a touch of cinnamon. Taste-wise, rich vanilla tones with warm hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, just about sums up the flavours. We're extremely proud of the finish - long and dry with a balance of subdued sweetness and a hint of toasted toffee. Norman Keith Collins was born in Reno, Nevada in 1911 but his family moved shortly thereafter to California where Norman would grow up. He didn’t stay there long either, and as a teenager started hopping freight trains across the country and meeting new people along the way. One of them was a man named “Big Mike”, who taught Norman the art of tattooing by hand, and then Gib “Tatts” Thomas who in the late 1920’s taught Norman how to use a tattoo machine.

Kraken Rum is believed to feature squid ink in its rum mix, which forms the dark hue of the rum. Kraken, like Sailor Jerry, is a rum brand that distributes only one variety of rum. Spiced rum is also made and sold by Captain Morgan, another major brand in the rum industry. Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry are two of the greatest brands in the market and close competitors as a result. When Norman died in 1973, his proteges took over the shop and continued his tradition, aiming to share Norman’s art and history with as much of the world as they could. In 1999, they formed Sailor Jerry Ltd., a company dedicated to expanding the use of the artwork Norman created in other mediums.

In honor of the man it was named after, Sailor Jerry Rum is as tasty and complex as his life. He was a bold spirit; therefore, this rum is a celebration of that. Beautiful hula dancers always greeted sailors when they arrived on the island. Who is Sailor Jerry? A rum and merchandise brand was eventually named after Sailor Jerry in his honor because of his enduring influence.

It was the Bacardi Rum Company that changed the world of rum-making with innovations like charcoal filtering. In addition to rum, it also makes scotch, vodka, and whiskey – all under the Bacardi brand name. Since 2015, an annual independently produced event now takes place in Hawaii every June called the "Sailor Jerry Festival" to honor Collins's legacy and Chinatown roots on Oahu. The multi-venue event includes live music, DJ's, cabaret performances, an art show - featured artists have included Sailor Jerry's great-grand niece Madison Thomas, local artists, and Masami Teraoka, movie screenings, a pin-up fashion show – where models wear outfits designed from Sailor Jerry flash, neighborhood tours, and tattoos available at three area shops, including Sailor Jerry's last location. [9] Combine the ginger slice, syrup, mint leaves, and lime wedges in the very bottom of your glass to make sure you get all those natural flavors and oils out.Reportedly, the original flavor combination that Sailor Jerry used in his rum was four specific spices: cinnamon, clove, vanilla and ginger. In addition, an infusion of lime juice was added. Whether those specific additives are still in use is unknown, especially following a recent re-formulation of the spirit. Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum uses all-natural spices and flavors that give our rum a rich, smooth taste characterized by top notes of vanilla and cinnamon. More than anything else, it's our spicing that makes the distinctive character, smoothness and versatility of our rum. Sailor Jerry rum is manufactured and bottled in the United States Virgin Islands. This blend was inspired by several Caribbean rums; thus, it has included a blend of spices from the region to replicate that flavor.

Captains used to show off their rum’s quality by igniting it with gunpowder to show “proof” of integrity to their crews in the old days, but this practice has faded. Sailor Jerry Rum is difficult to drink straight because this alcohol is so strong that you will be inebriated in no time. Unlike other strong alcohols, however, the Sailor Jerry Rum ignites with a lot of flavors. From citrus to tropical fruits, there are endless possibilities when it comes to mixing Sailor Jerry Rum.Our recipe is based on the tradition of sailors improving the flavor of their on-board rum rations. (The first nation to abolish issuing sailors daily rum was the U.S., which did so in 1862. New Zealand upheld the practice until 1990). Generally there were two ways to take the edge off rum. One was to age the liquid in wooden casks, which sailors rarely bothered with. The other way was to blend in spices. This is what most sailors did and it's what we do. Our higher proof spirit is historically accurate. In fact, the term “proof” comes from the method whereby sailors could assure their rum rations weren't being watered down. The ship's captain would ladle out a sample from the day's rum barrel in front of the men. He'd douse it with gunpowder, then give it a spark — if the rum was full strength, the powder ignited, giving sailors “proof” of the integrity of their rum.

Load a tall container of choice (we recommend a glass) with crushed ice. Then pour in the Jerry rum, fruit puree, lemon juice, and use a bar spoon to stir the ingredients thoroughly. At age 19, Collins enlisted in the United States Navy. During his subsequent travels at sea, he was exposed to the art and imagery of Southeast Asia. During his career as a tattoo artist, he worked as a licensed skipper of a large three-masted schooner, on which he conducted tours of the Hawaiian islands.
