Image from "My Dear Ancestors" short story (not included in this book, but indicative of Ito's style and wonderful imagination) His longest work, the three-volume Uzumaki, is about a town's obsession with spirals: people become variously fascinated with, terrified of, and consumed by the countless occurrences of the spiral in nature. Apart from the ghastly, convincingly-drawn deaths, the book projects an effective atmosphere of creeping fear as the town's inhabitants become less and less human, and more and more bizarre things begin to happen. A girl from school appears suddenly in Oshikiri's house and then disappears. He then befriends the girl at school. When she follows him home one day, things get wonky. He was inspired from a young age by his older sister's drawing and Kazuo Umezu's comics and thus took an interest in drawing horror comics himself. The main theme throughout is that of alternate dimensions and inter-dimensional travel. It’s really fun to see how these stories link and see how it all unfolds for Oshikiri and his group of classmates. Junji Ito is a master at horror graphic novels. His artworks are incredible...they can be beautiful and grotesque at the same time. He does magical things with his drawings, more than words can do sometimes alone. So when you combine the story of Frankenstein with Junji's art style, you get an absolute masterpiece.

well, i don't know whether i am disappointed or not about the fact that his version is pretty much the same as the book. The story is the same, because why would you change it? But we have these amazing pictures to go along with it. The story is a much faster and simpler read this way, but also extra exciting because of the pictures. As always the artwork from Junji Ito is stunning. To date, it has not been released officially in English, but has been scanlated in its entirety. (The other half portrayed Frankenstein’s monster as more vicious and heartless compared to the original version. Henry too found out about what Frankenstein did and was killed in pursuit of the monster. In the book, he was unaware of the monster's existence until the monster killed him. The monster meticulously planned as such that Frankenstein was to be accused as Henry's killer in another town.)The Frankenstein story is the longest one, and it’s a (too) faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley's original. It turns out to be rather flat, compared to Ito’s own original work, and less than scary. Shelley’s story weaves in social commentary, but Ito lets that go to focus on the basic story, and this turns out to be a disappointing approach. What is terrific is Ito's line work, and yes, he only seems to be getting better as an artist. Note: I received a copy of Frankenstein by Junji Ito via Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review. Pen Pal is where the stories start to get interesting. It’s about an odd girl (it’s quite a school Oshikiri goes to!) who pretends she has imaginary pen pals that write her letters - and then the letters turn nasty once she befriends Oshikiri and things get darker and darker from there. It’s an unpredictable and increasingly tense narrative with a fine ending. The main attraction in this collection is the retelling of the story of Frankenstein by master horror manga author Junji Ito. The book also contains some other short stories mainly centered around one character named Oshikiri, who has multiple versions of himself in multiple dimensions.
