On the Lone Peak 6.0, you’ll find Altra’s Grippy Max Trac outsole. Traction is about more than just being grippy. There needs to be a balance of grip, tread, and durability. And that’s exactly what Altra has done with this outsole. That’s the point of these shoes for me, they’re here to support and protect your feet, while you do the running. The Altra Lone Peak 6 are super grippy Karhi Ikoni Trail: 5mm heel to forefoot. A softer ride and more cushioning takes away some of the ground feel. Here is our review:

The midsole does feel a little firmer and more responsive. The only real reason I am mentioning it is that some runners, like me, might be using their Lone Peak 6 for a broader number of surfaces than they are designed for and the Altra Lone Peak 7 will be slightly less forgiving doing so. All that said, it’s a trail running shoe, not a road shoe! Because of this, I would choose the wide in the future, and I wouldn’t consider my foot overly wide, just average, but bare in mind I’m a barefoot runner used to wider fitting shoes. You may want to consider the wide fit if you’re on the edge. Most of the shoes fit well for me, except for the width toward the midfoot. I did have some slight overhang, which ended up being uncomfortable if I tied the laces too tight. The cushioning was a little on the softer side, but it wasn’t a marshmallow. While I wouldn’t choose the Lone Peaks for speedwork or short, speedy racing, I could still get a good, responsive push-off from them,” said tester Kelly A., who has a neutral gait and a wider foot with an average arch height.Overall I found the traction to be superb in the Altra Lone Peak 6. I took them out of a few really wet training runs and they outperformed my expectations every time. A shoe you can put the miles into Some prefer stitched overlays because it is tried and tested, but the Lone Peak now uses welded overlays. The Lone Peak 6 had double stitching throughout the shoe’s overlays, which may seem durable, but one big scuff can leave you with broken stitching that gradually unwinds over time. The same cannot be said for welded overlays, the seams are glued, and as long as the glue doesn’t fail (that’s the big question), these overlays won’t be moving. For neutral runners who want a go-to zero drop shoe, it’s a brilliant, reliable option for anything from shorter, speed workouts on the trail to full-on marathon-length runs. Who should NOT buy them

The outsole of the Altra Lone Peak 6 is pretty unchanged from its predecessor and with good reason. The 40 4.4mm deep lugs are really well constructed and planned out. Maybe not a downside, but it is worth noting that the zero-drop design is a significant change from what most people are accustomed to. The design goes against what you’ve likely always worn in terms of a running shoe, and some people simply might not like it. The 6.0 is coming in a bit larger than its predecessors, so if you were a size 10 in the Lone Peak 5.0 , there’s a chance you might have to drop to a 9.5 in the Lone Peak 6.0. The Lone Peak 6 is ready to take on any terrain with trail features like our grippy MaxTrac™ outsole with TrailClaw™ canted lugs designed to keep you going. This evolution’s updated upper construction and customizable lacing system provides a more secure fit so you can take on the trails with confidence. In summary the Lone Peak 7 builds on the well-established Lone Peak reputation. If you are happily running in a Lone Peak 6, then I’m confident you’ll enjoy the Lone Peak 7. The Lone Peak 7 offers more natural stability and increased traction. They are however a neutral shoe, well-designed to allow your feet to expand, function and the keep the trail runner heading forwards with a natural gait and better posture.

Shoes with a broad rounded toe box like Altra’s reduce how much your feet expand during a long run. This reduces the chance of getting blisters or your shoes rubbering. This is why brands like Altra and Topo that have broad rounded toe boxes have become popular with ultramarathon runners. Paul Giblin, a Scottish International ultramarathon runner, said that he thought that bleeding feet was ‘part of the deal’ when it came to ultramarathon running. That was until he discovered Topo Athletic shoes and ran a 100-mile race with no blisters or sore feet at the end.and Post. It’s advisable to use a service that insures the parcel in the event that it goes missing in transit. There are a few notable features we need to touch on. Some of these elements were carried over from past versions, and some are specific to the Lone Peak. Nonetheless, these are what separate the Altra from the rest. Zero Drop (Photo/Josh Kirchner) The durability has shone through in the past few versions of the Lone Peak. That’s one reason these shoes are fan favorites of long-distance hikers (I should know, I blasted through a different shoe in 400km, with no option but to duct tape my feet!).

While on the topic of the outsole, the Altra Lone Peak 6 has a tremendous 8mm of rubber underfoot. Bearing in mind that the average is 3.7mm, that is a ton of material. Another Altra-specific feature is its more rounded toebox, which runs in line with how the foot is naturally shaped. The wider design in front of the shoe allows the foot to splay out a bit more. Newly formulated MaxTrac outsole rubber and longer outsole lugs improve the Lone Peak 7’s grip on loose dirt. The lugs now measure 5mm in length—that’s about half a millimeter longer than the teeth on the Lone Peak 6. The roomy, rounded forefoot adds more to this cosy feeling, reducing uncomfortable friction against the lining. The mesh uppers with enhanced ventilation also feature some synthetic elements on the side panel and keep the feet dry and cool during long runs while the fully gusseted tongues keep the water away. Wrapping the feet securely yet leaving them just enough room to retain the wearer's mobility, their heel cups conform with the wearer's shape, enhancing the overall stability. Nimble on Mixed TerrainSo, what is a “zero-drop” trail running shoe? Unlike most shoes that have a slightly elevated heel from the toebox, zero-drop means the heel sits on the same plane as the toes. This creates a more balanced feel when on the trail, and it’s one of the things Altra is best known for. Rounded Toebox (Photo/Josh Kirchner)
