Take That is set to perform for the King and Queen Image: Isabel Infantes/empics/picture alliance His Majesty the King commissioned twelve new pieces of music for his coronation: six orchestral, five choral and one organ commission, all from world-renowned British composers.

Choirs, orchestras and soloists shone at King Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey on 6 May, in a magnificent showcase of British music-making. Here is the music that featured at the ceremony. Royal Harpist, Alis Huws, performed as part of the Coronation Orchestra in celebration of the King’s long-standing relationship with Wales. It is the first time in history that such a recording has been produced, marking an unprecedented event in both recorded music and British royal history. In another first for the coronation, Wiseman’s two-part composition, featured a gospel choir, the first time this kind of ensemble has performed at the historic royal event. Westminster Abbey Choir / Andrew Nethsingha; Coronation Choir and Orchestra / Sir Antonio Pappano and othersA small group of singers from The Monteverdi Choir also joined the main choral ensemble for the service. Music by much-loved English composers Byrd, Handel, Elgar, Walton, Parry, Vaughan Williams and Sir Henry Walford Davies has historically featured at coronations over the past four centuries, and was included in the service. The mics have to be close to avoid getting in the way of the cameras. But we’re not aiming to eavesdrop on anybody,” promised Ms Barry, speaking from the Abbey during a break in final rehearsals.

Two pieces of organ music take us to the fanfare by The State Trumpeters of the Household Calvary before Charles Hubert Parry’s noble anthem, I Was Glad, composed for the Coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, and also heard at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The service then continues, from the Recognition through readings and prayers to the Crowning itself, all interspersed with choral works ancient and modern, many specially commissioned for the occasion. Composers include Paul Mealor, Tarik O’Regan, Roxanna Panufnik, Debbie Wiseman and Andrew Lloyd Webber.She said: “This will be a truly historic recording, capturing a glorious range of music from across centuries and continents, reflecting the world-wide interest in our traditions, covering multiple locations in the wonderful acoustic of Westminster Abbey, and involving an unprecedented technical plan to present the entire experience to the world on the day itself. The choir sing as the Orb, the Sceptre with Dove and the Imperial State Crown are brought to the thrones before the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey, on May 6, 2023.

Under the baton of Andrew Nethsingha, the service was sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey and the Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, together with girl choristers from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast and from Truro Cathedral Choir.
