Choirs, orchestras and soloists shone at King Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey on 6 May, in a magnificent showcase of British music-making. Here is the music that featured at the ceremony. Royal Harpist, Alis Huws, performed as part of the Coronation Orchestra in celebration of the King’s long-standing relationship with Wales. It is the first time in history that such a recording has been produced, marking an unprecedented event in both recorded music and British royal history. In another first for the coronation, Wiseman’s two-part composition, featured a gospel choir, the first time this kind of ensemble has performed at the historic royal event. Two pieces of organ music take us to the fanfare by The State Trumpeters of the Household Calvary before Charles Hubert Parry’s noble anthem, I Was Glad, composed for the Coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, and also heard at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The service then continues, from the Recognition through readings and prayers to the Crowning itself, all interspersed with choral works ancient and modern, many specially commissioned for the occasion. Composers include Paul Mealor, Tarik O’Regan, Roxanna Panufnik, Debbie Wiseman and Andrew Lloyd Webber.She said: “This will be a truly historic recording, capturing a glorious range of music from across centuries and continents, reflecting the world-wide interest in our traditions, covering multiple locations in the wonderful acoustic of Westminster Abbey, and involving an unprecedented technical plan to present the entire experience to the world on the day itself.
