Later this summer we’ll be treated to a subversive ‘untelling’ in Natasha Solomon’s Fair Rosaline, but first we have Olivie Blake’s One For My Enemy – and it might just be my favourite Romeo and Juliet retelling in book form to date. Dimitri Fedorov,” the woman said, a name that, from her lips, might have been equally threatening aimed across enemy lines or whispered between silken sheets.

One for My Enemy by Olivie Blake | Goodreads

The Antonova sisters are beautiful, cunning and ruthless, and their mother – known only as Baba Yaga – is the elusive supplier of premium intoxicants. There's just something so satisfying about that trope that scratches all the right parts of my brain. The tangle of political disputes and shadowy plots that leads to Kel and Lin crossing paths is not only thick enough to make the several hundred pages fly by, it will leave readers eager for a series full of twists and turns.

A thrilling story of rival witch families in New York City, from New York Times bestselling author and internet phenomenon Olivie Blake. with this, we were able to see the sibling dynamics and their innermost thoughts on their roles in their respective families along with how they grew up resulted in the people they are in the present timeline.

the multi-perspective of this book had readers anticipating when characters' would find out what we knew which was brilliant. However, I'm okay with that because this book—like many of Olivie Blake’s books—is about the characters. But when Conor becomes old enough to consider marriage, Kel learns that it will take more than hidden daggers to protect his charge. We have the matriarch of the Antonova family, and we get to see her devotion to her many daughters, but we also quickly realize that her love is not equally distributed. it irked me to the point i thought of dnf but fortunately, my urge to find out what happened in the end prevailed.

the skill in taking time to build on the persona of every single character in this book with their feelings and motives. If Dimitri was the Fedorov sun, Roman was the moon in orbit, his dark eyes carving a perimeter of warning around his elder brother. In modern-day Manhattan where we lay our scene, two rival witch families fight to maintain control of their respective criminal empires. Lin has worked hard to be allowed to study medicine even though she's a woman, but when her medical talents aren’t enough to help heal her best friend, she wonders if the answer lies in the study of forbidden magic. Their individual character arcs were impressive, and their love story was tragic in a deliciously painful way with a satisfying ending. He beckoned, gesturing her to a chair, and she rewarded him with a smile, smoothing down her skirt before settling herself at the chair’s edge. It will push you to madness or else to greatness, and you have only to choose for yourselves what your futures will be. loved the family vibes in this one, although i wish we got to see even more of the antonova siblings besides marya and sasha!

One For My Enemy | Olive Blake

I always think I know who I'm going to become attached to when I go into one of Blake's books, but every time, I find myself surprised. i would’ve liked to see a bit more of the other antonova sisters, especially the twins, but this book had enough going on i suppose haha. This chilling story of ambition and magic will make you question your own morals as you grow to love (and hate) its fascinating, ruthless cast of characters. An urban fantasy set in New York City, Blake’s story centres on the vicious power plays and intricate romantic entanglements between two warring witch families.ONE FOR MY ENEMY is a little more straight-forward and other than being a classic retelling there isn't much pretension at all. one for my enemy genuinely took the oxygen out of my lungs and wrenched my heart at numerous points throughout this story. going into this, i thought the primary storyline would belong to sasha and lev, but it turned out that they were just one of the many plots! The Atlas Six introduces six of the most devious, talented, and flawed characters to ever find themselves in a magical library, and then sets them against one another in a series of stunning betrayals and reversals. the last fifty pages, just no words, had me on the edge of my seat and heart-racing in anticipation and terrified of what was to happen.
