Wasn't expecting it to go down the road it did that's for sure. Glad to see some support towards the NHS in mainstream media. Just wanted more Judi Dench😢— Louie | The Movie Man (@moviemanlouie) March 7, 2023 The film strikes a topical nerve with its story of an English hospital under threat of closure. The narrative takes an intimate look at the lives of both the nurses and the patients in one particular geriatric ward, instilling the value of the NHS.

Allelujah screened in advance for Cineworld Unlimited members last night and we wanted to know what they thought of it. Here are a few of their responses. In October 2021, it was announced that Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, and David Bradley had joined the cast of the film, [5] and principal photography began later that month. [6] [7] Release [ edit ] A filming crew from a local television programme called Pennine People are invited to the Beth to document a volunteer-led effort to save it from closure, during which time they also interview the Chairman of the Board and some of the residents. At the same time, Colin Colman, a consultant to the Health Secretary, arrives at the Beth, whose closure he had advised, to visit his father Joe and assess the hospital. One of the residents, Mary Moss, is discouraged from being interviewed on-camera by the television crew, but Valentine gives her an iPad and encourages her to document her day-to-day experiences. Allelujah is a 2022 British drama film directed by Richard Eyre and written by Heidi Thomas. It is based on Alan Bennett's play of the same name. They challenge us to think hard about how, as a society, we should care for the old. The film is an urgent call to arms to support our public health services. Thankfully, the combination of good jokes and an important subject made it irresistible to some of our best – and best-known – actors.” This cookie, set by YouTube, registers a unique ID to store data on what videos from YouTube the user has seen. [9] Critical reception [ edit ] Judi Dench, Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey and more to star in Alan Bennett's Allelujah film". 25 October 2021. Based on the 2018 Alan Bennett play of the same name, Allelujah tells the story of Bethlehem (or “Beth” as the locals call it), a geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital that’s at risk of shutting down due to government budget cuts. Conservative management consultant Colin (Russell Tovey) is visiting the Beth to inspect it ahead of its impending closure, and it’s up to the staff, including the idealistic Dr Valentine (Bally Gill) and head nurse Sister Gilpin (Jennifer Saunders), to win him over and save the hospital.

Well it certainly took a bit of a turn at the end! And the last few minutes were a real punch in the stomach about the importance of the NHS, and not to let people try to get rid of it.— Gareth Harrison (@videogareth) March 7, 2023 In an epilogue, Valentine is shown working in an intensive care unit at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, where he encounters Ambrose, one of the Beth's former residents, who dies holding his hand. An exhausted, enraged Valentine leaves the hospital and breaks the fourth wall with an impassioned monologue in defence of the NHS. [2] Cast [ edit ] Much darker than I was expecting based on the trailer, and takes the viewer In many unexpected directions, with some biting statements from the playwright & screenwriter at its core. Jennifer Saunders carries the lead role well.— Dave Billingsley (@dab051176) March 7, 2023 Perhaps the thought of a veteran Brit character-actor lineup in a care setting is a little mawkish, and I incidentally still have grim memories of Dustin Hoffman’s unsufferably patronising 2012 film Quartet with Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon.

Some fantastic performances from the cast, rather emotional for many reasons and I wasn't expecting the way the story went. Thanks for another enjoyable #UnlimitedScreening.— Blazing Minds (@BlazingMinds) March 7, 2023 Allelujah had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September 2022, and was released in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The ostensible purpose and meaning of the film is of course to proclaim the value of the NHS, although you might argue that this faith is slightly deflected or undermined by the big narrative reveal – inspired by well-attested real life cases. But the new Covid section at the end, with its unexpected pivot to drama and crisis, works well enough. A low-key, attractive, if minor Alan Bennett. Bethlehem Hospital is the legendary institution which gave rise to the word “bedlam” – its name has been reapplied, without obvious irony, to a fictional geriatric hospital in Yorkshire for this gentle, shrewd ensemble comedy, adapted by screenwriter Heidi Thomas from the much-admired 2018 stage play by Alan Bennett with a new Covid-aware coda bolted on to the end. Richard Eyre directs with a sure hand.
