When she was a teenager, Simone Ashley would often spend New Year’s Eve alone, writing letters to herself. “I was a bit of a rebel,” the actor explains, half amused at her own self-seriousness. “I went to a predominantly white all-girls school. I didn’t fit in, there was bullying and I was wishing my life away.” She would remind herself to have perspective, that it’d all be over in a few years. “I would tell myself, ‘You’ll move away from this place, you’ll find your people and you’ll do whatever you want.’” I was deeply moved to hear of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s passing. She dedicated her life to her country with great dignity and loyalty, and her remarkable 70-year reign spanned so many generations it is hard for those of us who call the UK home to imagine our lives without her. Although I was unable to collect my OBE from the Palace in person in 2020 due to the pandemic, she remains the reason that I felt so honoured to have received it in the first place. Donatella Versace That’s not something Ashley herself had, growing up in Surrey with her older brother and South Indian Tamil parents who’d emigrated to the UK. Raised on Disney and Pixar, she had a performative streak from a young age and was determined to be an actor despite having no industry connections. Her accountant mother and pharmacist father tried to instil a sense of academic discipline but she “failed at so many subjects”. At 16, she left school to attend sixth form at the performing arts institution Redroofs, before going on to ArtsEd drama school to study musical theatre. “It wasn’t right for me and I left after my first year.” She made the decision to move to LA by herself at 17, to pursue acting for real.

You will feel social going into the week, Aries, with the full moon in Gemini. You might be connecting with friends or have numerous meetings and calls on your calendar. You could also be making progress in developing writing, presentations, or other communication-based work. With Mercury moving into Capricorn, you will be thinking about your long-term career goals and what type of work you’re the most passionate about. In addition, you might be having important conversations regarding your role at work, or you’re negotiating contracts and speaking publicly at your job right now. Taurus Horoscope The real-life events that I May Destroy You is based on took place when she was working on season two of Chewing Gum. While up late writing at the office, she headed out to meet a friend at a bar. Sometime that night, her drink was spiked, she says, and she was sexually assaulted. As she tells it, the emotional trauma she suffered has been tempered by confronting it head-on. “I don’t think I really understood how much making a show would make this thing lose its power,” she says. “Now it’s just a scar like these ones.” She points to her knees. Born in the UK but raised in Nigeria, I saw the difficult legacy of colonialism. However, I was able to separate the ongoing complexities of such from the Queen as a person, who represented kindness, stability and faith – values of great importance to my family. I still have a photograph of the time that my late mother met the Queen because she took so much pride in it – the impact of Her Majesty’s passing was seismic to my family, but also to me as someone in close proximity to the Royal Family via my role as an ambassador and beneficiary of The Prince’s Trust. She is irreplaceable. There’s no question about that. Celeste But her family firmly wants her to be unburdened. “I always lang tell her na parang na whatever the expectations of others are, in the end, it really doesn’t matter. It’s more about how you feel about it yourself,” Mike says. “If you find joy in your everyday work and you continue to improve because that’s the only thing that matters. How successful you are, or how unsuccessful you are, at the end of the day, ikaw lang naman eh. That’s the only thing that matters, how you feel about yourself, how you feel about your journey.”Whatever the routine of Miko, Mike adds, Alex would join in. “So she was at the tennis court at a very young age. When Kuya was playing with Lolo so nakikita na niya. So she’s exposed to tennis at a very young age,” Mike says. “But yeah, it was really more of a bonding thing with Lolo. He wanted to see his grandkids more often so parang yung strategy niya, turuan mo nga mag-tennis yan. So once a week, naging twice a week.” As she excelled and grew more passionate about the game, Alex joined more tournaments, locally and regionally. The Ealas went all in toward the dream. In 2018, Eala was in a dog fight against seventh-seeded Czech player Linda Noskova for the title. After splitting the first two sets, the pair found themselves in a tense decider. The European player got her nose out front at 5-3 and was two points away from the win at 30-30 on Alex’s serve. Alex continues to climb herself. As of October 10, 2022, the Women’s Tennis Association ranks her at 252, which is the highest ever ranking for a Filipina singles player in history. She is within arms reach of the big leagues. She was a brilliant leader with an unparalleled work ethic and deep commitment to duty. Thank you, Your Majesty, for the incredible legacy you have left behind. Erin O’Connor

A hard worker is just among the things that Alex’s coaches describe her. Adrien Vaseux, who has been working with Alex since September of last year, thinks she is a “tiger on court.” Alex’s triumph at Tarbes in 2018 opened more doors for the teen. Not only did it win her a wildcard at that year’s Roland Garros, she received a full scholarship to the Rafael Nadal Academy, in the Spaniard’s hometown of Mallorca. Within that same year, she and Miko moved to Spain to train. The mindset is huge. She [doesn’t] give up. Sometimes there is a tough moment, she knows how to go [hard] with the mindset, and to put more intensity. I love to train her because she’s intense,” he says. “She’s asking a lot of questions when some stuff doesn’t work. She is always learning. She is always open-minded.” For Vaseux, the best thing about his young ward is her capacity for daily work. This year saw the retirement of Roger Federer and Serena Williams, two names that have transcended generations and whose recognition goes beyond the confines of the sport. After winning against another Czech, Lucie Havlíčková, at the US Open girls final, she asked if she could speak to the crowd in Tagalog. “ Buong puso ko itong pinaglaban, hindi lang para sa sarili ko, kung hindi para sa kinabukasan ng Pilipinas. So hindi ko lang panalo ito, panalo nating lahat,” Alex says, her voice breaking slightly.

As the children got into tennis more, it was also Lolo who helped frame the family’s mindset. “At an early age, nagtanong siya, ‘ ano ba gusto natin sa tennis? Club player lang ba? Intramurals? Varsity? Gusto mo ba mag-college tennis sa US? Or gusto mo mag-professional? Kasi that would dictate how hard we will push,” Mike, a club player himself, shares. “So we sort of decided [on] college, but as much as possible we tried to train for pro. And if you get a college scholarship, good. And if it’s possible to become pro, then mas maganda. Parang bonus.” The exhibition opens with a small group of street photographs of passing women taken when Steven was in the sixth grade. Seen here for the first time, they are like mini-Garry Winogrands, and seem to hint at things to come. Steven is not so sure. “I think that obviously looking at those pictures from a 12-year-old’s perspective, I might have been dreaming of possible futures but no, I never thought that I would have a job as a photographer. Well, when you are that young you aren’t thinking about jobs at all.” You will feel supported by the people in your life going into the week, Leo, with the full moon in Gemini. You could have friends reaching out, or you may be organising a group activity. It could also be that the people you know are connecting you to opportunities, or you’re realising what friendships are most important to you. As Mercury moves into Capricorn, you may be thinking about how you can be extra productive, or you might be doing extensive writing or speaking for work. You could be more interested in taking care of your physical body too. Virgo HoroscopeMaybe not, but these early obsessions with modelling, style and beauty enabled his ascent to the pinnacle of the profession. His understanding of all aspects of fashion is unparalleled and his influence has nurtured numerous careers, particularly those of the models featured in this exhibition. Perhaps no-one more so than Linda Evangelista, who appears here more often than anyone.

When I curated the exhibition at the V&A in 2009, Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones, I really wanted to have some royal hats in there. I had a hat that Philip Treacy had made for the now Queen Consort, Camilla, and I also wanted to have a hat from the Queen and the Queen Mother. From the Queen, I asked if I could have an Hermès scarf, because I thought that was one of the most wonderful “hats” that she had ever worn. She wore it with a bow under her chin – she was the only person in the world who had ever done that. And I probably rehearsed with scarves for a month on a mannequin before I was able to tie it in the way that Her Majesty would have done it. I was very aware that it was a huge honour. The Queen very kindly chose the hat that the Queen Mother had worn on her 100th birthday to be in that exhibition, which was a very defining moment for me. I never made hats for the Queen, but to be involved in that way was a real honour too. Let’s talk about Ghana, 1961. There’s a photograph of the Queen dancing with Kwame Nkrumah, four years after the country’s independence. It makes me think of my Ghanaian dad and my English mum dancing together at the same time – the Queen was doing something radical in that era. She brought nations together. I actually met her for the only time earlier this year, at The Platinum Jubilee Celebration: A Gallop Through History performance. It had rained all afternoon and was chilly. Despite the Queen’s mobility issues, she stayed for the entire evening. Afterwards, we were all told to line up and wave as she drove past. Then, unexpectedly, Alan Titchmarsh walked over to me. “Follow me,” he said. That’s where I met the Queen! There was something so engaging and charismatic about this 96-year-old beautiful woman, so tiny and twinkly. She was delighted by life. I looked at her and thought, “I hope that I have that much curiosity, engagement and fun about me when I’m your age.” Alexa Chung As for developing the sport itself in the country, Mike believes that the “best way to help Philippine tennis is to excel. And just show, be an example that the Filipino can do it. Na kayang gawin.” I think it really helped that my brother was there and my family was there,” she adds, referring to dad Mike, mom Rizza, and older brother Miko. “It helped me relax, and, you know, have fun, like, before the match and not really think about, you know, what’s actually happening.” The climate in the Balearic Island, and the fact that it has so many beaches, is something that feels familiar. “I think growing up here and growing up in the Philippines, it was good for me to see both cultures and keep an open mind, and meet so many new people,” Alex explains. “The good thing about being in the academy for me, I’ve met so many people from different countries. I know at least a little about their culture, about cultures around the world. I think I grew up very well educated.”

Sagittarius Horoscope Today: November 13, 2022

Nineteen-ninety-three saw Meisel’s first professional assignment in London where he collaborated with Blow on “Anglo-Saxon Attitude”. It was Blow, too, who first introduced him to Stella Tennant. “She had no interest. She had never modelled before. It just wasn’t something that she wanted to do. Issie just gave me all these different pictures of society girls that she knew. And of course, I fell in love with Stella, everything about Stella. What an incredible model. She gave everything and I adored her. She would sit there reading books in Chinese. We took her to Paris to work on Versace with Linda and Kristen. And Stella was like, ‘What the hell am I doing?’ It was Linda who said to her, ‘No, you’re great.’ And she really was.” You will be building self-confidence this week, Aquarius, with the full moon in Gemini. You may be leaning into a creative hobby or preparing to launch a passion project you’ve been developing. You may also be realising how you can build yourself up rather than comparing yourself to other people, and you’re showing your true personality in both social and romantic situations. As Mercury moves into Capricorn, your intuition may feel stronger, or you could have an interest in reading about topics related to spirituality or mental health. You might be calming your mind by journaling or meditating. Pisces Horoscope Vogue Philippines visits Alex Eala at her training grounds in Mallorca, mere weeks after her historic win at the US Open. Jacs T. Sampayan talks to the young champion about her early beginnings, her supportive family, and what she thinks of carrying the torch for Philippine tennis. The version of you that’s making their way out of the eclipse portal this month is certainly not the same version of you that walked into it. Change is good, Scorpio. It’s what you have been consciously manifesting for yourself. But, that doesn’t make it any less confusing. That doesn’t make it any easier to cope with. Do yourself a favour and practise stillness. Make peace with the clouds of confusion instead of trying to find ‘absolute answers’ or solutions. At the same time, give yourself the permission to find your authentic voice, to express how you feel in every situation. Re-evaluating the rules of engagement is something you’re being called to do at this moment. Plutonians who are in a dead-end relationship are being encouraged to move on. Remembering that you deserve will empower you to let go of what is no longer a vibrational match.
