Description

This picture book is sweet and heartwarming. It tells the story of two young hikers who go into the woods in search of a Yeti. Yeti is afraid and doesn't want to show himself, so they write letters to him to try to get him to come out of the woods. During the hike, a snowstorm is coming, and the hikers aren't ready. Yeti, on the other hand, proves to be a good friend and comes up with a way to help the hikers while still being hidden. The Cryptid Files series by Jean Flitcroft This is in 4 sections, The Northeast, The South, The Midwest, and The West, with a mix of well known and obscure cryptids. Flatwoods Monster of West Virginia , a robotic extraterrestrial that crash-landed in rural Appalachia Re-entry is the second book in the series, and I really love how each chapter focuses on a different character. Each chapter starts with a variation of “My name is ____ and I ____ Astronaut Academy.”

The second has the Fouke Monster, Mothman, Skunk Ape, Lizard Man, Flatwoods Monster, Minnesota Iceman, Chupacabra as well as the less covered a lot Altamaha-ha, Woodbooger, and Rougarou. What’s the vibe in a cryptid town versus any random small town where you might stop at a gas station? In Hunting Monsters, Palaeozoological researcher Professor Darren Naish explores the fascinating science behind these elusive monsters - a science known as 'cryptozoology'. Bizarre stories of ancient sea-monsters and resurgent… But then, there’s another twist where Phil Nichols, who’s a famous skeptic—he’s always like, you know, bursting everybody’s balloons, proving things aren’t as cool as you think they are—he actually has an interesting twist. He says he thinks the hoax never happened. He goes through all these newspapers and says, “You know what, there’s no record of a hotel fire, no record of this person who admitted to faking it.” So it’s a real reversal—the hoaxnever happened. So what about the monster? Is it real or somebody else’s hoax?

Mothman goes under the microscope as Jeff Wamsley continues to dig for more clues to this complex mystery.ᅠ A required investigative resource for those who are searching for answers." - John A. Keel, Author, The Mothman Prophecies. Ancient mythical animals are all around us in words and images. Following the transformations of such animals through literature and art across millennia has been my passion since the early ’80s. It was then, after years of writing and teaching, that I became intrigued by a winged and fishtailed lion figure on an antique oil lamp hanging in my study. That hybrid creature led me to the eagle-lion griffin and my first published book, The Book of Gryphons. I have followed a host of mythical beasts ever since. My most recent book, The Phoenix: An Unnatural Biography of a Mythical Beast , was published in a 2021 Chinese translation. As a writer, I strive to create stories that I wish I had found on shelves when I was younger. In that same way, every title on this list not only brings new ways to find adventures through reading, but will hopefully leave young readers with new skills to face the world around them. We often think just cause a story has fantastical elements that it makes them detached from reality, but give any of these a read and you'll find, the farther it is from real life, the brighter the common themes we all share shine through. This horror novel follows a reporter’s investigation into a bloody massacre that occurred in a small, remote community in Washington. While inhabitants of the town sheltered in place following an eruption of Mount Rainier, sasquatches emerged, revealing not only their existence in the first place, but also their terrifying and savage nature. The narrator presents the recovered journal entries of Kate Holland, a resident of the town, alongside his own research and interviews with various experts, to construct an account of the incident. Patricia Thang is an educator located in Los Angeles. Though a native Angeleno through and through, her heart also belongs to Tokyo, where much of her family is from. Besides books, she is an enthusiastic devourer of many things, including podcasts, television, and J-pop. She realizes there’s not enough time in the world to consume all of that content, but she’s trying anyway. Other endeavors to which she has dedicated herself include cuddling her dogs until they’re annoyed and taste-testing every vegan ice cream she can find.

The United States of Cryptids

Long before I began writing my first fictional story and way before I researched for my first nonfiction paranormal book, I gave up ignoring the voices in my head and began writing horror, fantasy, and six nonfiction books on the paranormal in Virginia. Besides learning a new piece of history or legend I never knew before, the research for my nonfiction books and articles inspired me to incorporate it into my horror or fantasy fiction. I enjoy writing fiction, but I believe I learn as much as my readers when I write nonfiction. Mysterious America: The Ultimate Guide to the Nation's Weirdest Wonders, Strangest Spots, and Creepiest Creatures I’m a weirdo, so of course I’m attracted to the idea that the universe may be weird, too. I like the idea that the universe is able to hold itself together ninety-nine percent of the time, but every once in a while it just has to let its freak flag fly. Even if paranormal experiences are nothing more than waking dreams, they may still be worth our attention (the same as any dream). Even if such experiences aren’t objectively “real”, they’re subjectively fascinating. I love exploring the line between reality and unreality. Like Fort, I don’t believe it to be as cut and dry as mainstream science would have us believe. Bigfoot - the name used for any large, hairy biped reported in every state of the United States and every Canadian province - has long baffled casual tourists and experienced scientists. Now readers can examine the evidence for this elusive creature and take a journey into the realm of crytozoology, or hidden animals, with the number one author in the field of Bigfoot study, Loren Coleman. Readers will travel with Coleman during his forty-year study as he investigates, interviews and conducts fieldwork on these incredible beasts. From ancient Native traditions to today's Internet databases that record the sightings almost as… Thoughtful and well-researched...a worthy addition to any cryptid enthusiast’s library.”— AIPT Comics

Cryptozoology A to Z: The Encyclopedia of Loch Monsters, Sasquatch, Chupacabras & Other Authentic Mysteries of Nature Overall, this is a great read to learn more about the maybe mythical, maybe real creatures that call the US their home. Definitely would recommend! There's something in the woods that wasn't there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws. Strange Creatures Seldom Seen: Giant Beavers, Sasquatch, Manipogos, and Other Mystery Animals in Manitoba and Beyond Mattie can't remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. She must never make him upset. But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they're not alone after all.
