Our photography team at Lin & Jirsa Photography consists of dozens of shooters, and we take GNARBOX units with us to all of our weddings, no matter how large or small the event. Preserving our files is equally important for every job. We’ve previously shared data management tips for multi-shooter studios like ours, and GNARBOX plays a significant role in our data management workflow. Obviously, it is not fair to compare what one can do in phone software vs full-featured desktop software, but that’s another reason why I personally don’t edit anything on my phone. If I were to edit on an iPad or a laptop, I know that I could get pretty similar results as the above using Lightroom. Inside, the Gnarbox uses 128GB of flash memory and 2GB of RAM. Transfer speeds are comparable to a laptop, with read speeds up to 270MB per second and write speeds up to 100MB/s. Now keep in mind that I was performing my tests in an indoor environment, with temperature staying around 70° F. I cannot imagine what would happen to the unit if I let it copy a memory card at warmer temperatures – it would probably end up melting the chassis and potentially even destroying the data on both the unit itself and the memory card. So if you are planning to use the Gnarbox in the field, keep it cool and try not to subject it to direct sun rays – you might end up damaging it. To me, this is a rather serious hardware issue to be concerned about. From my prior experience working in the IT field, I know that computer hardware just doesn’t last when subjected to very high temperatures. Software ConcernsHome Mode Switching from OLED & Auto-Connect: It’s my opinion that more info is better. The screen can now show which wifi network you’re on as well as whether you’re in “Field” or “Home Mode.” It may not seem like a huge deal, but it is really helpful to know. Add the fact that this device comes in at under a pound (0.8lb (375g)), and I’m beyond impressed. They’ve thought of everything to ensure the build quality is top notch. And, once the card has been loaded to the GNARBOX, you’ll be able to really start the magic this device provides: the culling, rating, meta tagging, and editing! The above looks significantly better, since Lightroom has excellent image editing capabilities in comparison. The image contains more details, all highlight information is preserved and it has more punch to it. With Gnarbox, there is not even a way to add sharpening to the final image… Additionally, there are subtle feet at the base of the GNARBOX that gives just enough space below the device to allow for air flow and heat management.

Improvements

To boost this concept, GNARBOX has partnered with Photo Mechanic to create a revolutionary culling process that can be done within the GNARBOX’s app, Selects. As it boots up, you’ll see a loading bar below the GNARBOX logo, and once it’s ready, you’ll be able to ingest your card via the apps on your phone or tablet.

I didn’t notice until after it loaded, and then when I tried to fix it, it uploaded not only the missed files, but also the ones that had originally been uploaded.

NOTE: As a reminder, it is our recommended best practice that you do NOT update your GNARBOX while in the midst of traveling, especially if you will not have access to a computer. I kid you not, I literally took a session from wandering along the southern coast of Iceland, loaded it to the GNARBOX, made selects with the couple while at a great little brewpub in Vík, and had the entire session culled on my iPad before we ever got our food. As photographers and videographers, there comes a time when we’re about to set off on a trip, suitcase at that sit-on-to-zip capacity, where we have to wonder if we really need to bring a laptop. The Gnarbox proposes a solution between dragging a laptop somewhere we’d rather not and running into a “card full” warning with nowhere to dump the images or footage. With the promise of being just as indestructible as a waterproof camera, it’s also perfect for those more extreme adventures, as we discovered during our Gnarbox review. It is important to note that per Gnarbox “ Best Practices” document, one should not attempt to transfer any files or connect external hard drives while the unit is charging.
