The novel, like the film, follows a group of boys at an isolated preparatory school in Vermont, where excellence and uniformity are not just expected but commanded of them. At Welton, Todd is at first quiet and shy, but with the encouragement of John Keating and the friendship of Neil Perry, his roommate, he learns to open up, express his feelings, and compose impressive poetry. Richard Cameron (who just goes by “Cameron”) is a stiff, overly obedient student at Welton, and one of the novel’s most overtly villainous characters. He asks them to consider how many of them actually followed their dreams and how many followed the path life seemed to have carved out for them. Yes, I love tragic books and yes, I love having my heart ripped out of my chest and torn into tiniest pieces, as well as my soul aching in despair and frustration for the character.

Now how to be diplomatic about this next week at my first-ever attending of a book club I've joined, for which I read this "novel. Todd is shy and fearful, always walking unnoticed in the shadow of his older brother, a legacy student at Welton. He brought back the Dead Poet Society, he made his friends do what they love, he was there for Todd, he was just the perfect human being! The film scored high with critics, winning the Oscar in 1990 for Best Original Screenplay and receiving nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Williams), and Best Director (Peter Weir).
