The album's original cover art has proved iconic, and has been imitated and parodied on numerous occasions, such as on the 1992 Peaceville Volume 4 compilation album, the 1992 Volume Two EP by the band Sleep, Longmont Potion Castle Vol. 4 by the prank caller Longmont Potion Castle, and the 1994 Planet Caravan EP by Pantera. Myös studion ulkopuoliset olosuhteet L.A.:ssa olivat kohdallaan: "Vuorasimme talon Bel Airista", muistelee Osbourne. " Kokaiinia, huumeita, viinaa ja naisia riitti. Pidimme todellakin hauskaa siellä". [11] Butler oli samoilla linjoilla vuonna 2001: "Kokkeli oli tosiaan tullut kuvioihin. Menimme Losiin ja aloitimme aivan toisenlaisen elämäntyylin. Puolet budjetista meni kokaiiniin ja puolet levyntekoon. Irstailu Bel Airissa oli uskomatonta". [12] Nauhoitukset ja sisältö [ muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä ] Let’s just get the bad out of the way- FX is useless. It’s just a bunch of sounds with little meaning. A waste of two minutes, it’s probably best to skip this boring, “experimental” interlude.

A solid 8/10 (I'll reserve my 10 for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath if it ever comes around and a couple of 9s for MOR and Sabotage). Adam Ranger: A good album, but not a great album. but does have some filler and feels a little disjointed in places, however it was a joy to listen to this again. It was the album they recorded before my all time favourite the following year Sabbath Bloody Sabbath so a precursor to that it deserves praise.Tony Iommi can still riff as always. His highlights include opener Wheels of Confusion, the epic Snowblind, and the ridiculously fun Supernaut. His playing is a little bit faster than normal, but he doesn't lose the sludgy feel that he perfected on the other albums. One thing that HAS consistently changed are his solos, and they are absolutely STUNNING on Vol. 4. Changes - This one doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album, being entirely piano-driven, in stark contrast to the guitar-driven nature of the rest of the album. This is not to say that this isn't a good song, as it captures a feeling of despair quite well, but it drags on a bit and doesn't fit well with the rest of the songs.

Both versions of the Vol 4 box sets come with extensive booklets featuring liner notes, rare photos, and a poster with previously unpublished early artwork of the album using the working title Snowblind. Vol. 4 was released in September 1972, and while most critics of the era were dismissive of the album, it achieved gold status in less than a month, and was the band's fourth consecutive release to sell one million copies in the United States. [22] It reached number 13 on Billboard's pop album chart [23] and number 8 on the UK Albums Chart. [24] The song "Tomorrow's Dream" was released as a single but failed to chart. [25] Following an extensive tour of the United States, the band toured Australia for the first time in 1973, and later Europe. Bill Wards drumming on this record is pretty solid. Giving some decent structure to the songs but seems to be unmotivated and just came along for the ride. Ward's cymbals are also way too loud. Covering up everything that there is to be heard at times like on "Supernaut" and "Snowblind". Other than that Ward's drumming is just okay at best and definitely his weakest contribute to the bands discography.Vuonna 2021 albumista julkaistiin lisämateriaalia sisältävä 4-CD ja 5-LP Super Deluxe -versio. Mukana on remasteroitu versio varsinaisesta albumista, tuottaja-muusikko Steven Wilsonin miksauksia vaihtoehtoisista studio-otoista ja varhaisista versioista sekä tuottaja Richard Digby Smithin uudelleenmiksaama versio vuoden 1973 live-konsertista. [22] Kappaleet [ muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä ] After 3 albums in a span of 17 months, the third being the thinnest at progression, Sabbath would have been forgiven if they rested on what worked thus far and treated their creative output as a conveyor belt. Pumping out the same album with slight variations into perpetuity, but in only fourteen months they started the second phase of their first era. Never again would a Sabbath album be as heavy as they were on Master Of Reality but, fortunately, they would also never be that simplistic either. Four of the next five albums - beginning with this very release - all share one congruity and that is eclecticism.

The Straightener" (outro kappaleessa "Wheels of Confusion") ja "Every Day Comes & Goes" (nopea väliosa kappaleessa "Under the Sun") ovat kappaleiden osien nimiä, jotka esiintyvät albumin joissain myöhemmissä Pohjois-Amerika:n painoksissa. Kappaleet eivät eroa Euroopan ja Britannian versioista. The rest of the band is also as brilliant as ever. The aforementioned heaviness is due in large part to Geezer Butler’s bass. Drummer Bill Ward has never been in finer form, and the drum solo on “Supernaut” is absolutely entertaining and fits the song perfectly. Finally, Ozzy is at his best (pre-solo career). His default mode of suffering/fear/paranoia has never been on better display than on “Snowblind.” Piano/synth ballad “Changes” may be maligned by most metalheads and many others, but it reveals a side of Ozzy that had never before been seen. His energy elevates “Supernaut” from “great” to “classic” and makes “Tomorrow’s Dream” the underrated burner that it is. which is used as a base for some nice harmonised lead work. This song fades out with a patented Iommi 'twin guitar' solo ... or so we think until it fades in with a melody line based on the previous chord progression drenched in reverb. Albumin kenties tunnetuin kappale ja klassikoksi noussut "Snowblind" kertoo, kuten nimikin viittaa (suom. lumisokea, tulee aineen valkoisesta väristä), kokaiinista. Butler: "Päämme olivat täynnä kokaiinia kun olimme L.A:ssa. Käytimme enemmän kokaiinia kuin teimme musiikkia, joten pitihän siitäkin tehdä laulu". [11] Keskitempoinen kappale on kuitenkin yhtyeen tyyliin monivivahteinen sisältäen erilaisia riffikulkuja ja yksi säkeistö menee nopeammalla tempolla. Viimeisessä säkeistössä ja loppusoolossa käytetään jousisovitusta taustalla. Osbourne kuiskaa kuuluvasti sanan "cocaine" 1. säkeistön jälkeen. Kappaleesta tuli pysyvä numero Sabbathin settiin Osbournen aikakaudella. The lyrical themes and mood of “Vol. 4” pertains mostly overtly drug influenced chaos of the mind. While other albums pertained to depression, society, and some sci-fi, “Vol. 4” goes very little into that area, and it seems to be obsessed with itself and its drugs. Oricon Album Chart Book: Complete Edition 1970–2005 (in Japanese). Roppongi, Tokyo: Oricon Entertainment. 2006. ISBN 4-87131-077-9. Singlejulkaisut [ muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä ] ” Tomorrow's Dream” ( syyskuu 1972, Vertigo 6059 061, Warner Bros WB 7625) When people think of this record, it’s more than likely they’re thinking about the piano ballad “Changes” or the live staple “Snowblind”. Both are rightfully memorable, the former being yet another step into different territory for the band, the latter continuing the doom metal formula they had cemented into the universe. Then of course there’s “Supernaught,” the gallop-drenched banger that acts as the flipside, completing the circle of singles that probably hold the catchiest choruses as well as taking the most credit.

Bill Griffin: An excellent album, the product of a more mature Sabbath and even getting a little proggy (a direction that would be further explored and developed on the next two albums) but the guitar is too low in the mix, making it sound bass-heavy. A question I get asked a lot for these things are.. “Is it worth it?” There’s no way I can answer that. I can only answer if it’s worth it for me. Only you can answer if it’s worth it for you, I’m not going to give you an answer to that one.
