Stanley Livingstone Baxter (born 24 May 1926) is a Scottish actor, comedian, impressionist and author. Humphrey Carpenter is a keen musician, who founded the jazz band Vile Bodies, which is still resident at the Ritz Hotel in London. But Mr Majeika's magic saves the day, Class Three and the circus end up on the news and once again Mr Potter, the headmaster, misses it all! Baxter was known for his impressions of famous people, particularly The Queen (referred to in the context of the shows as 'the Duchess of Brendagh').

Mr Majeika - Wikipedia

This story is really funny as Mr Majeika ends up having to make the school dinners and he makes real toad in the hole for lunch on Friday which was really silly. His biography described how Baxter had told Moira that he was gay before they married, with Baxter having sought to end their relationship as a result, but that she had threatened suicide, causing him to relent. Baxter remained a great favourite on the Scottish pantomime circuit, especially at the King's Theatre, Glasgow, up until his retirement in 1992. He developed his performing skills further during his national service with the British Army's Combined Services Entertainment unit, working alongside comedy actor Kenneth Williams, actor Peter Vaughan, film director John Schlesinger and dramatist Peter Nichols, who used the experience as the basis for his play Privates on Parade. It was adapted into a children's television series of the same title and produced for the ITV network by TVS.In Bing Crosby's final Christmas special, taped for CBS in the UK just a few weeks before Crosby's death in 1977, Baxter played multiple roles, including a butler, cook and – in one skit opposite a cracking-up Crosby – the ghost of Bob Hope's court jester ancestor. This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills through a reading of the opening section of Humphrey Carpenter’s ‘Mr Majeika. A charming British childrens program was Mr Majeika which ran for three consecutive seasons during 1988-90. Hamish, the class pest, soon finds that he has more than met his match in the wizard-turned-teacher. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, prediction and summarising skills.

There are many gay people these days who are fairly comfortable with their sexuality, fairly happy with who they are. I originally used this with Year 2-3 children, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups. The children are about 9 years old when the progrtam beagn and about 11 when the series ended in 1990.

Other Mr Majeika stories include Mr Majeika and the Haunted Hotel, Mr Majeika Joins the Circus, Mr Majeika and the School Caretaker and Mr Majeika Vanishes. The pupils in Class 3 at St Barty's School are not impressed when their headteacher imposes strict rules of behaviour for Halloween. Baxter guest-starred in an episode of The Goodies and later appeared in the lead role in Mr Majeika, developed from the books by Humphrey Carpenter, a children's show about a magic teacher, expelled from Walpurgis (the wizard land) for failing his professional examinations.
