The most common locations of biofilm are those in which access to and management of oral hygiene tools are difficult. Also, biofilm is located where the tongue and saliva's natural self-cleaning process does not work effectively for a variety of reasons. Studies suggest that biofilm deposits accumulate in larger quantities on irregular areas, “attached gingiva,” and the lateral surfaces of the tongue [ 13, 14].

To stress the importance of flossing, do it for them regularly until they're able to do it themselves. This will help them develop a good habit of flossing while they still have their baby teeth so that when their permanent teeth come in, they already have flossing worked into their daily oral routine. Use floss that is soft and flexible so that it doesn't hurt their teeth and is comfortable on their gums. Are great for children’ oral health maintenance and early childhood caries (ECC) doesn’t happen if plaque is removed The problem is, plaque is very hard to see since it is translucent or pale yellow. You might be able to feel it with your tongue as it can make teeth feel slimy or rough, but it's hard to know if you're doing a good job of removing all the plaque on your teeth (or your child's teeth) when you brush and floss. It may be that you're missing certain teeth when you brush without realizing, or not paying enough attention to the gumline, for instance. You can also use disclosing tablets before brushing your teeth, to see how dirty they really are. This can be a helpful tactic for children who are complaining about having to brush in the first place!

We’d like to add that disclosing tablets are a great way to teach children about the importance of brushing their teeth thoroughly. The fact that children can see the stains on their teeth makes the activity fun and engaging, and therefore highly educational. It's also possible to buy toothpaste that shows plaque, without dying your mouth and your sink, although these can be more difficult to find. In the US, chewable dental disclosing tablets are by far the most widely available product to reveal plaque on teeth. Mouthwash that shows plaque is harder to find, and toothpastes are few and far between.

They can also be handy if you're an orthodontic patient. During orthodontic treatments like getting braces, you might have a more challenging time brushing your teeth. A study in the Turkish Journal of Orthodontics highlighted this. The participants in this study were all orthodontic patients. They were divided into three groups: the first one was motivated by conventional oral hygiene instructions, the second one was given plaque disclosing tablets in the dentist's office, while the third group experienced the same chairside demonstration and was also given at-home disclosing tablets. The study concluded that the self-application of disclosing tablets at home and repeated oral hygiene motivation can result in improved oral hygiene. You can find dental plaque disclosing tablets in pharmacies, supermarkets, dental surgeries and online. They cost around 12p – 15p per tablet, depending on the brand and quantity you buy.

Disclosing agents are also available in liquid forms. It helps you and your child to see the accumulation of plaque and control it on your teeth. Therefore, the next time you want to clean your teeth, you brush or re-brush that part of your teeth that is more affected by plaque. It is a great way to manage the health of your gum and teeth with a targeted cleaning and brushing. What are plaque disclosing tablets used for? The strong and two-way relationship of oral health and the general health of the human body is now proven [1]. Safeguarding and promoting oral health contributes decisively to maintaining overall health and wellness and should thus be prioritized and improved. The role of public healthcare providers is crucial in this effort. Providing experiential education to the public in relation to oral hygiene at an early age proves to be particularly effective [ 2, 3]. An important part of this training is the detection and localization of dental bacterial plaque (DBP), which is the main cause of the most common oral diseases (caries and periodontal disease) [ 4, 5]. DBP is a thin, yellowish-white coating (thereafter referred to as biofilm) which adheres to various dental surfaces and consists of microbial colonies and products of oral microbial flora metabolism. Biofilm is defined as “bacterial communities that are embedded in a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances” [ 6, 7]. If you have problems using a chewable tablet to show plaque on your teeth, it's possible to get a plaque disclosing mouthwash instead. Dental plaque consists of many species of bacteria that are formed into biofilm, which is composed of organisms that adhere to the surface of the teeth. When dental plaque hardens, it becomes mineralized and will be calcified deposits on your teeth. You can also use dental disclosing tablets before brushing your teeth, to see how dirty they really are. This can be a helpful tactic for children who are complaining about having to brush in the first place! Now, let's look at the different plaque disclosing products available in the UK.
