Description

What I liked about this book is the amazing descriptions that allows the reader to enter another world, it also includes alliteration that adds special effects to the book. The Anglo-Saxon story of Beowulf is told in three short animations, covering his battles with the monster Grendel and Grendel's mother. In time, Hygelac is killed in a war against the Shyflings, and, after Hygelac’s son dies, Beowulf ascends to the throne of the Geats. According to Beowulf’s wishes, they burn their departed king’s body on a huge funeral pyre and then bury him with a massive treasure in a barrow overlooking the sea. After reading "The Hobbit" in January, I was convinced that Tolkien has based part of his world-building, if not all, on a large amount of Norse mythology, which is not really that surprising, he was a philologist and language teacher English and Literature.

Beowulf: Morpurgo, Michael, Foreman, Michael: 9780763672973

My just turned six year old was breathless with excitement as I read about the final battle with the Dragon while my older children had plenty to contribute to our discussion afterwards. The slides could do with formatting, and videos embedding, but the quality of the lesson materials is good. I can imagine being in the great halls of old, headstrong the beasts and dirty tellers or snuggled by a warm danish fire heaing it told as a bedtime story. Morpurgo retains the dramatic poetry of the original, the bite and strength of the narrative, and the Christian content. The lines in Beowulf use a lot of alliteration, meaning that they repeat certain syllables or sounds. To avenge Aeschere’s death, the company travels to the murky swamp, where Beowulf dives into the water and fights Grendel’s mother in her underwater lair.

This is a series of six lessons (including PP and worksheets) on Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo that focuses on different areas of the UKS2 N. I recommend this book to girls and boys age 9+ because kids under nine might get scared of this book when it is read. It started, and I realised it was CG, and I actually thought, oh, this might be less alarming, then.

So, yeah, I wouldn't dare to read the original translated poem and that's the reason why I chose this little one as a starting point.

D.--the tale of Beowulf, a Geat warrior who battles three evils so powerful that they destroy entire kingdoms. Mirroring the original poem faithfully, Morpurgo narrates how Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands, ripping Grendel's arm from his body, before also slaying Grendel's sea hag mother by decapitating her. This is a key text in Anglo-Saxon literature, which delves into the historical period with detail and provides children with a rich background knowledge of the time. it may be an old story, yet it troubles and terrifies us now as much as it ever did, for we still fear the evil that stalks out there in the darkness and beyond. In this retelling, British Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo breathes new vitality into the oldest English epic, originally written around 1000 A.If you would like to change your settings or withdraw consent at any time, the link to do so is in our privacy policy accessible from our home page. This retelling captures the rhythm and drama of the original text but in a far more accessible way than some other tellings for children.
