In the meantime, our outspoken heroine went ominously quiet around the house – giving Ryan and “weak, spineless” Clare the near-silent treatment. She deleted kisses from texts and refused to reciprocate affection. It was a shatteringly low-key portrayal of bone-deep hurt. She’d “never liked that Neil” and clung to the faint hope that Clare was somehow being forced to betray her. Sadly, this will be the third and final series of Happy Valley, according to the creators. Executive producer Will Johnston said the series creator Sally Wainwright and star Sarah Lancashire had agreed it “would only return once more”. What sounds like a standard crime drama is elevated by Wainwright's refusal to paint characters in easy and recognisable colours. When his request for a payrise is turned down, accountant Kevin Weatherill (Steve Pemberton) hatches a plan to kidnap his boss's daughter, with the help of a group of local villains, including Royce. Cawood, played with steely obsession by Lancashire, clearly equates the kidnapped girl with her own daughter: she lost one, she's not going to lose another. Written and created by Sally Wainwright, the multi-BAFTA award winning hit Happy Valley, featuring Sarah Lancashire in her iconic role of Sergeant Catherine Cawood, will launch at 9pm on Sunday 1 January 2023 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. A second series was commissioned on 18 August 2014. Filming began in August 2015, and the first episode was broadcast on 9 February 2016. [10] The second series was written by Wainwright, produced by Lewis, and directed by Lyn and Wainwright. [11] Catherine's workplace is a former police station in Sowerby Bridge, and her home and local pub (two other main filming locations) are based in Hebden Bridge. The prison scenes were filmed at Oakham Enterprise Park in Rutland, which was HMP Ashwell until its closure.

In Halifax, West Yorkshire, Catherine Cawood is a divorced police sergeant with two children. She is still trying to recover from the suicide of her daughter, which happened eight years ago. Catherine is raising her grandson, Ryan, who was born due to her daughter being raped by Tommy Lee Royce. Just when it seems like Catherine is gaining control over her life, she discovers that Tommy, whom she holds responsible for her daughter's suicide, has been released from prison after serving time for other offences. Catherine becomes consumed by the idea of confronting him, unaware that Tommy is involved in a criminal organisation with the intention of kidnapping Anne Gallagher, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, for ransom. On 20 August 2014, the series was further released on Netflix in Canada and the USA, marketed as a "Netflix Original". [36] However, it departed Netflix in March 2020. [37] The first episode aired on 29 April 2014 at 21:00, receiving 8.64million viewers, as the second most watched show of the week (commencing 28 April 2014) for BBC One. [12] The BBC reported that the show received an average consolidated audience of 8.21million viewers over six episodes and an additional 8.1million requests for the show on BBC iPlayer. [13] Radio Times called Happy Valley a "word-of-mouth hit" which "steadily became a success outside the normal audience for the slot and channel." [14] After episode one aired, Ofcom received four complaints under the category "violence and dangerous behaviour", but they did not pursue the matter. [15]Weekly top 30 programmes". BARB. In October 2020, Wainwright confirmed that there would be a third series and that she was in the "early stages" of writing it. Filming for the third series began in January 2022. Happy Valley fans were delighted when the hugely anticipated third and final series returned to our screens on New Years Day after an almost seven year hiatus. In the summer of 2016, series one of Happy Valley was released on Netflix in the UK and is currently repeated on the channel W. A year later, series two was released on Netflix in the UK.

The last instalment of the BBC crime drama, created and written by Sally Wainwright, returned on New Year’s Day after an almost seven-year break. During the first episode of the new series, Sarah Lancashire’s character Sergeant Catherine Cawood discovered the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir.

Happy Valley – New drama for BBC One starring Sarah Lancashire and James Norton". BBC. 10 April 2014 . Retrieved 10 April 2014. After another distressing assault – no wonder their traumatised daughter never takes her coat off – Joanna was understandably desperate to escape the monstrous Rob. She pleaded with her lover-cum-diazepam dealer, Faisal Bhatti (Amit Shah), to make good on a vague promise to set her up in a flat. Although the show is well written, its main selling point is that it revolves around two standout performances. As Norman, Freddie Highmore does a terrific job of foreshadowing the monster he will eventually become (taxidermy, anyone?) while remaining sweet and sympathetic throughout. He brings a classmate flowers when her father ends up in hospital, but he is also becoming aware that there is something wrong with him. "Sometimes you hear and you see things that aren't there," explains Norma. "It's like some kind of trance or something."
