Together with Pete Donaldson, Broad presents a twice weekly Abroad in Japan series of podcasts on Radio Stakhanov about Japanese culture, current events, and cuisine. The last 40% of the book quickly recaps moments of the past 6 years of his YouTube career, featuring highlights such as his viral North Korean missile video and his interview with Ken Watanabe. However, even as a first time author, Chris is a remarkably talented author with a fantastic penmanship.

It’s such a great feeling to pick up a book for which I have zero context, and having it be a total banger! This rarely happens (unless it is Michael Palin and his adventures - this book compares favorably to him). If you aren't, I'd say watch one or two of his videos and see if you like the style and sense of humour before picking this one up. I’ve been a fan of Chris’ work for a while now and when he announced the book, I knew it would be worth the read. I can't recommend this enough and I'm rather certain that I'm one of the very first people to have read this in the world! We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities.

A sarcastic Brit living in Japan, Chris Broad has been the cynical face of the Abroad in Japan Youtube channel since 2012, when he moved into a tiny countryside apartment in north Japan and quickly realised he could turn his name into a pun. My husband introduced me to the Abroad in Japan YouTube channel a few years ago and we've enjoyed watching all the videos together ever since. This simple quote has become my life motto when trying to learn new things; such as: driving on the left side of the road, going to sketchy izakayas, memorizing 3 different alphabets, and doing things I never thought I would do. When I saw the announcement for this book I was excited to get my hands on it and hear more about Chris' journey from being an English teacher to a highly successful creator.I have been a big fan of Abroad in Japan for many years, thus I already knew a lot of the stories told in this book. With blockbuster moments such as a terrifying North Korean missile incident, a mortifying experience at a love hotel and a week spent with Japan’s biggest movie star, Abroad in Japan is an extraordinary and informative journey through the Land of the Rising Sun. The less lucky ones were bundled on to coaches heading to Tokyo’s less exotic neighbouring prefectures of Chiba and Saitama. However I think even for readers who are not familiar with Chris might also enjoy the tone of voice in this book.

In 2022, Broad appeared in an interview with the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, and received an honorary membership for a duration of one year. I had a lot of time to read during my stay in Spain and apart from scrolling through social media I'd read through this autobiography many chapters at a go. Needless to say, I've now been watching Broad's youtube videos for several years and he never fails to entertain, his snarky comments and brilliant sarcasm also made their way into the book which gave it an ulterior sense of familiarity. It was still fun but it felt a bit long and the vast fry humour got replaced with more serious topics like the 2011 earthquake. For the first time ever we take a look behind the scenes of a love hotel and meet the charismatic owner who's built his world around the business. Ludwig brings Chessboxing to the world of content creation with the Mogul Chessboxing Championship". By coming with few preconceptions, he manages to overcome culture shock, isolation, a lack of direction and confronts the difference from his own upbringing in the UK to his new home.
