We’ve also done our best to ensure the water based paint offers enough coverage for a fantastic colour payoff. A couple of coats may be required and we recommend application with a short hair roller or brush. Achieving the perfect paint finish Once your furniture is clean, apply your Chalk Paint® colour of choice using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® Brushes for a textured finish or Flat Brushes for a smooth, contemporary finish and allow your furniture to dry (at least 2-3 hours). Using the chalk paint outside exposes it to UV rays, water, and other elements. This can damage the painting if left unprotected. Remember that chalk paint is water-resistant and not waterproof. Meaning that it can only resist water damage for a while. Colour has an incredible influence on our homes and lives. Alongside the colour of the walls, the colour of home furniture changes the perception of space and temperature in a room, often affecting our mood in one way or another.

Chalk Paint ™ Lacquer is your garden furnitures’ best defence not only against peeling paint caused by water damage but also against UV rays and fading colour intensity. Apply Chalk Paint™ Lacquer thoroughly to all painted garden furniture. Choose from Matt Lacquer for a matt finish or Gloss Lacquer for a light sheen, but not ultra-glossy, finish. The variety of pastel colours also make it easy to mix and match shades to create a distressed look. All shades dry to a contemporary matt finish that disguises minor surface imperfections. For longer lasting designs, we recommend using our Rainbow Chalk Markers (available in a rainbow of colours!) Remove old flaking or peeling paint too. Old paint won’t affect chalk paint’s adherence, but it can prevent you from applying a level coat of new product. A light sanding is usually the only surface preparation required.

This ensures that all dust, dirt and grime is removed and you’re left with a smooth surface to paint on. Only handle the object when the paint is fully dry and avoid touching it excessively in the first 24 hours after painting. Most chalk paints won’t require sealing before outdoor use, however for peace of mind, you could apply a multi-purpose sealant that will protect your painted item from the rain as well as the sun and UV rays. It works by expanding and contracting with the surface, particularly during hot and cold spells. Open the tin of paint and stir vigorously. Use a paintbrush or roller to apply the product to the furniture, following the natural pattern of the wood. If the furniture is made of another material, apply the product in unilateral strokes, one section at a time. Don’t sand! As with using Chalk Paint® indoors, there is no need to prep or prime your outdoor furniture. Colour range aside, this product stands out for its ease of use. Forget about surface preparation. This paint can cover almost any surface that was not primed or sanded. For an effortless smooth finish, we recommend applying the paint with a roller instead of a paintbrush.

Making outdoor chalk paint is no different than making chalk paint you use indoors. It is the same, except you use “exterior” paint. When the paint is used outside though, it gradually fades and will take on a softened weathered patina. If you don’t need to prime your cushions, you can do the same steps as above but with your chalk paint instead of your primer.
