Grammar in this book is still quite useful and common too, so just using it to learn new grammar is an option as well. And having over 600 pages of information organized into a dictionary format made finding the right ones a piece of cake. Pretty much everything you'd ever want to know about a grammar point is included, the images above don't really do this dictionary justice. Each construct has detailed examples, subtleties in usage, and usage differences between similar constructs. It then provides a lot of helpful Japanese examples that help the reader see and fully understand it.Some pass it over because of the "Basic" in the title, but the lessons and information in this book are still extremely detailed and helpful. Also, the beginning intro sections, grammatical terms and characteristics of Japanese grammar, and appendices are great, especially the list of onomatopoeia, the conjugation charts, and summary charts.

However I would recommand this book for a upper beginner, as you have to have prior knowledge of the Kana (Hiragana and Katakana). This book, and its "intermediate" and "advanced" counterparts, are among the most useful Japanese language learning tools you can pick up, especially if you are studying independently and/or trying to learn to read.A good Japanese grammar textbook explains the intricacies of grammar in a way that’s easy to follow by providing multiple examples and illustrations of concepts. Studying for the N1 exam and talking with other examinees has made it clear how many people use "guess" when figuring out when to use wa versus ga. I bought this book looking for something more detailed and in depth to add to my Japanese Grammar book collection.
