Description

This document is intended as a guide to BS 5839 Part 6: 2019 and is not a substitute for reading the Code of Practice itself. Instead, it's designed to help make the implications and recommendations of BS 5839 Part 6 more clearly understood, and to offer advice on how to design, install, commission, and maintain a system that meets the requirements, with reference to the 2019 amendments. With regard to categories, the standard of protection in sheltered housing flats has been increased from Category LD2 to Category LD1, positioning it as a higher potential risk. To meet LD1 requirements, the installation of a fire detection system is required throughout the premises – this includes all rooms (and circulation areas that form part of the escape routes) except toilets, bathrooms and shower rooms.

Mixed system: Grade D1 Category LD2 in common areas and heat detector in each flat (room / lobby opening onto escape route) connected to the communal system, plus Grade D1 Category LD3 in each flat (not connected to the communal system) to protect the sleeping occupant.Taking the time to research and understand the different types of batteries available is a great way to ensure that the correct battery is chosen for the device. Moreover, the higher voltage of a D2 battery can cause overheating, potentially leading to fire and other safety risks. Research has shown that D2 batteries are more prone to bursting and leaking, which can cause further safety and health concerns. Therefore, it is always best to use the type of battery that is specified in the instructions that come with the appliance.

In terms of performance, d2 batteries have a shorter lifespan than d4 batteries, and are not able to provide as much power. D4 batteries, on the other hand, can last longer and provide more power, but at a higher cost. Ultimately, the decision between d2 and d4 batteries comes down to your own needs and preferences. Grade D2 is required for new, owner-occupied buildings of up to three storeys, while rented properties both new and existing should comply with Grade D1. Existing owner-occupied buildings may use Grade F2 alarms. Premises with very large storeys (>200m 2), except single-storey buildings, require a Grade A alarm system. It is important to also consider the size of the battery and if it will fit into a device designed for D batteries before making a switch. In September 2004, the Code of Practice was extensively revised and updated by the publication of BS 5839 Part 6: 2004 which superseded BS 5839 Part 6: 1995, which is now withdrawn. The changes therein are important and need to be fully understood and appreciated by all those with responsibility for fire safety in domestic dwellings, as the Government's Building Regulations referenced the 2004 version. Below we outline the key changes to the BS 5839-6 Standard and the areas professionals should be aware of to ensure they’re offering individuals the highest standard of fire protection throughout all types of domestic properties. This applies to architects, building professionals, installers and enforcing authorities. Revised system grading for fire detection and fire alarm systems:

It should also be noted that existing premises with alarm systems installed according to previous versions of the Code, such as those complying with older Building Regulations that reference BS 5839-6: 2004 or 2013, do not automatically need to replace or amend their systems to meet the latest edition. The Grade System BS 5839: Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems for Buildings Part 6, rev. 2019: Code of Practice for the Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Domestic Premises

Multi-sensor alarms combine two or more sensor types, most commonly optical and heat, to accomplish: decreased reaction time to a fire event; decreased occurrence of false alarms; or both of these factors. Subject to compliance with either BS EN 54-7 or BS EN 14604: 2005, which are specifications for the manufacturing and performance of smoke detectors, multi-sensor alarms can be used in place of smoke alarms when following the Code. BS 5839-6 also makes detailed recommendations in regards to wiring and commissioning of fire alarm systems, primarily in relation to Grades A and C but with some relevance to Grades D and F as well. An updated standard came out in 2013 and included for the first time common areas in sheltered housing. Carbon monoxide detectors were also permitted as fire alarm sensors and the requirements for rented accommodations were tightened. The Building Regulations were not updated to refer to this version and still expected compliance with the 2004 edition. First launched in 1995, British Standard BS 5839-6 has long established itself as a key reference standard for specifiers, architects and fire safety personnel, outlining the specific systems that should be installed for the purpose of life safety and property protection. Covering the implementation of fire precautions in domestic premises, including HMOs and sheltered housing, throughout both the dwelling units and common areas, the Standard is applicable to both new build and materially altered dwellings (in conjunction with regional building regulations) as well as existing properties. The recommendations can be applied to the fire detection components of combined domestic fire and intruder alarm systems, or fire and social alarm systems.Technological developments of jet interceptor aircraft and guided surface-to-air missiles led to the disbanding of AA Command in the mid-1950s and D2, which by then had been renamed DV2, fell into disuse and was abandoned. Category LD1: The highest level of protection of all occupants who might occupy the dwelling over the lifetime of the fire detection and fire alarm system. A system installed throughout the premises, incorporating detectors in all circulation areas that form part of the escape routes from the premises, and in all rooms and areas, other than those with negligible sources of ignition, such as toilets, bathrooms and shower rooms. Grade C – System consisting of fire detectors and alarm sounders (which may be domestic smoke alarms) connected to a common power supply, comprising normal mains and stand-by supply, with central control equipment.
