In Riders Republic, join a massive multiplayer playground as you shred the snow, mud and dirt in real time with more than 50 players. Fly through snowy mountains with a wingsuit or race down arid canyons on your bike as you roam free in a huge open world. Nonetheless, Steep was a great foundation for what could become a breath of fresh air for fans of winter sports games. But Ubisoft Annecy went the extra mile and released Riders Republic — a game that maintained Steep’s open world aspects and winter sports while also adding bikes to the mix.

Customize your character to show off your style, including a new set of outfits and boards that represent skate culture. Some of that brilliance might be familiar from Steep, 2016's equally open-ended extreme sports outing upon which so much of Riders Republic is built. This is neither as focussed - there's a broadening out of disciplines to include bikes as well as terrain types that go beyond mere snow here - nor quite so strange, with no spoken word interjections from the mountains themselves (at least none that I've come across in over a dozen hours or so of play - this is a vast, vast game after all). It is deeply, gloriously silly, though, a playground told with an exuberance that's infectious as you pedal down perilous courses in matching giraffe outfits. Compete in all-out mass races with over 50 players — grind or collide and fight your way to the finish line! Many events take advantage of those seamlessly transitions aswell. There are multisport races that puts you on a racing ski and after a big jump you are suddenly flying through the mountains with your wingsuit. It’s rather baffling that you can’t play Mass Races whenever you want. You have to wait for the game to put out a call altering you that one is about to start. This happens frequently enough that you’ll not have to wait long, but why you can’t just matchmake on demand is a real mystery.

Riders Republic Ultimate Edition

The map is filled with secrets. For instance, there are five hundred balloons spread randomly across the regions that reward you with in-game currency, as well as eleven relics that reward you with funkie gear. There are also 45 landmarks to find and 23 stunts, which are basically challenges for each of the sports for you to complete.

It's annoying, too, especially at first when the overlong tutorial takes hold and refuses to let go for the best part of an hour. This is one of those extreme sports games that overlays its action with grating voice overs, the dialogue more likely to give you a nosebleed than any of the highest altitudes you're invited to scale. Given how pervasive that voiceover can be in the first hour, I wouldn't be surprised if it proved an endurance test too far for most players. Persevere, though, and it's then often remarkable how eager Riders Republic is to get out of the way. There's a decent amount of community tools in Riders Republic, and where that community takes this game next is going to be fascinating. Choose whether you’d rather freestyle with some sweet Slopestyle and Freeride action or if you're more of an Enduro, Downhill, Gravel and Cross Country Races kinda rider!Riders Republic’s combination of a massive open world that you can explore at will and strong gameplay variety is a compelling one. The career mode can become a tad repetitive as you progress deeper, but the game never punishes you for switching gears and doing something else when tedium creeps in. Although Riders Republic does so much right when it comes to the sense of progression, I do have to say that its approach to seasonal content was a bit of a let down. Even though I am always being rewarded something, some times I am left with the impression that I am not being rewarded enough.
