If I do my job well, not only does myth become visible within a painting, but that painting becomes a doorway into a new way of looking at the world. My imagery comes from myth, folklore and the old oral story-telling tradition, not from fantasy literature; and although I did some commercial illustration in my youth, I don't see myself as an illustrator now.

Abrams 2004) - Berk and Froud once again join forces, lifting the moldy latch and opening the door to the world of GOBLINS! It was on the set of The Dark Crystal, however, with its imagery rooted in folklore and myth, that she found her greatest satisfaction, working with the shy-but-brilliant English faery artist at the heart of the film. The style of writing by the 'two humans' is prety musah how you would expect, its put in a way which people would think that reaserchers and scientists, would do. Through this book's charms (poems), tellings (stories), gifts (ponderings), and lavish illustrations (by Brian Froud) we learn that the right words can still open a door into Elfland, into wonder, and that storied landscapes are all around us, even now, waiting to be discovered.Rather than squeezing into his old cottage, a tiny place in the center of the village, they renovated a rambling Devon "longhouse" out in the countryside: a thatched granite building dating from medieval times, built over older Saxon foundations.

He and Wendy created the story concept for a graphic novel series based on THE DARK CRYSTAL to be published by Archaia Comics in 2011. Faeries, goblins, trolls and sprites stare down from Brian's paintings on the walls, and cavort in the shape of magical dolls and sculptures created by Wendy. A fascinating compendium investigating the undersea world of the merfolk exploring: oceanic magic, merfolk language and customs, underwater villages, historical evidence of merfolk and their unfortunate capture, maps of the oceanic zones and their various inhabitants, perilous creatures of the sea and how to avoid them, and remarkable revelations about merfolk/human relations. I always try to keep the drawing fairly loose; I don't like to get tight at this stage, which closes down possibilities. First (Australian) edition (published in the same format by Blackie in the UK, and Macmillan in the US).The fun is from the parts where the 'Goblins' have done their annotations, aswell as the handprints, pictures, scribbles, and near phonetic (sp) spellings. The whole book is pretty delightful, even for--or perhaps especially for--those who couldn't stand Froud's pretty, ethereal faeries. HOW TO BE A VIKING (Templar UK 2008) -- The account of Ari the Learned, a 12th century Icelandic scholar, written for young and aspiring Vikings to help them navigate the perils and adventures of the Norse world.

Scott Momaday, he has studied at Oxford and traveled widely, making friends in many parts of the world. Now, Silas must embark on a dangerous path into the Shadowlands to embrace his destiny and discover the truth about his father, no matter the cost. Yound Edward takes his friend, Myrtle, a bespectacled rationalist, into the wood to show her Godlins, popping up all around, but invisible to her.It was on the set of The Dark Crystal that Brian met Wendy, who created the "gelflings" and other creatures for the film. The best answer I can give is that I don't have much of a choice in whether I believe in them or not, for they seem to insist on my painting them. With over 8 million books sold to date, Brian's international best sellers include LADY COTTINGTON'S PRESSED FAIRY BOOK, GOOD FAERIES / BAD FAERIES and THE FAERIES' ORACLE and LADY COTTINGTON'S FAIRY ALBUM. Brilliantly written and illustrated by Brian Froud and Ari Berk, 'Goblins' combines the detailed, folkloric approach of 'Faeries' and 'Runes of Elfland' with the wackiness of 'Lady Cottington' to make their most visually rich and outrageous book yet.

I don't like things to be fixed too solidly or explained too fully; I want each viewing to be like a re-telling of a tale, full of new possibilities. Despite the world-wide success of Faeries, and the huge acclaim he received for the Henson films, it often astonishes Brian's fans to know that it took him over ten years to find a publisher for his subsequent work. Mind you, it's not that I lie around on a chaise longue waiting for inspiration to strike -- painting is a discipline and I'm in my studio working a regular work day from 9 to 5.

Among the contents so minutely examined are the goblin's holiday Almanack; a field guide to goblin types, with portraits and principal characteristics; and vast amounts of ill-assorted notes about goblins at play and, uh, play. As artists, Brian and I are merely part of a long tradition -- giving old tales new life and passing them on to the generations to come. I'll get out my tools, I'll get to work, and something will demand to come through -- some creature will form on the page before me, demanding to say: Hello!
