Description

Saviour of the Imperium contains the novels The Emperor’s Finest, The Last Ditch and The Greater Good, the novella Old Soldiers Never Die, along with a number of additional short stories. Sandy Mitchell is the author of a long-running series of Warhammer 40,000 novels about the hero of the Imperium, Commissar Ciaphas Cain. The most recent book in that series is The Greater Good, and there is also the audio drama Dead In The Water. He has also written a plethora of short stories, including 'The Last Man' in the Sabbat Worlds anthology, along with several novels set in the Warhammer World. He lives and works in Cambridge UK. The tyranids may just be the greatest threat the Imperium has ever faced, voracious extragalactic monsters intent on devouring all life… but they've never had to contend with Commissar Cain! These three novels tell tales of Cain vs the tyranids – plus there are t'au and zombies too! At this point, members of the Valhallen 597ths command staff have come to an easy comradely-affection for Jurgen when previously he seemed to be considered more as a quirky outgrowth of the comissar. In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, mankind’s mighty Imperium is threatened on all sides by its enemies – brutal orks, ravening tyranid hordes and the corrupt armies of Chaos. Many are the heroes who stand at the forefront of this endless fight against evil, but few names conjure up as much awe and respect as the legendary commissar Ciaphas Cain. When all seems lost, Cain, his trusty but malodorous aide Jurgen, and the Valhallan 597th, can always be relied upon to ride to the rescue and save the day! With their thrills and spills, and tongue in cheek humour, the Ciaphas Cain novels offer a unique vision of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

In addition, there are several encounters referred to by Cain in passing, such as being held prisoner in a Dark Eldar Reaver citadel, successfully escaping from a Chaos Dreadnought, and being recalled to service during the later Tyrannic Wars. These have not been explored in detail and will likely be the subject of future novels in the series. Jurgen has another advantage: he's a Blank. Psychic and warp powers simply cease to function around him. Which has come in quite handy on several occasions. I was really happy to see two short stories told from Jurgen's point of view in this volume. Black Library - Ciaphas Cain

Throughout the Imperium, Cain is revered as a hero and always praised for his courage and resourcefulness, but in his private memoirs he expresses another opinion: all he ever wanted was a safe posting with few responsibilities, with little to no chance of being exposed to actual danger. However, despite his efforts (or perhaps because of them) to always be in the safest place possible, somehow Cain always manages to get himself in the most dangerous situations and is forced to save his hide. Unfortunately for Cain, saving his own hide often inadvertently results in him saving the day, which inflates his status even further! The fourth, fifth, and sixth novels, as well as the short stories Sector 13 and Traitor's Gambit, were collected into a second omnibus entitled Ciaphas Cain: Defender of the Imperium in 2010. For instance, in For the Emperor, the first full-length Cain novel, Cain refers in passing to the First Siege of Perlia, which earned him much of his unwanted notoriety, but this event is not depicted in any detail until Death or Glory, the fourth novel. His hobbies include the martial arts of Aikido and Iaido, miniature wargaming, role-playing games, and pottering about on the family allotment. Compilation of novels and short stories featuring the very popular and much loved character Ciaphas Cain in a third Omnibus edition. As always, these novels and the one novella are presented as unpublished excerpts from Cain's own massive personal archive, edited and presented by Imperial Inquisitor Amberley Vail, a sometime professional and occasional romantic partner of Cain's. She introduces each excerpt, provides copious footnotes to expand on points in the text, and, when necessary, inserts portions of other writings to fill in the gaps in Cain's self-centered writing. Cain arrives on the planet of Periremunda, a bizarre world of plateaux rising above deserts and lava flows, alongside the Valhallan 597th to stem its rioting populace and prevent a full-on rebellion. After arriving on the planet and surviving an attempt on his life by Genestealer hybrids alongside a few of their purestrain brethren in the city streets, things on Periremunda get more and more interesting as the Inquisitor Amberley Vail shows up and whisks Cain into a tumult of conspiracies, encroaching Hive Fleets and mysterious Chaos cults. Before the war is over Cain will have to survive many more attempts on his life, as it would seem that Vail, in an attempt to draw attention away from herself and her investigations, has made out the commissar to be the figurehead of the entire campaign and personal witch hunter!

Many are the heroes who stand at the forefront of this endless fight against evil, but few names conjure up as much awe and respect as the legendary commissar Ciaphas Cain.On several of the novels' covers, with artwork by Clint Langley, Cain is often shown holding a bolter or bolt pistol. In the books, however, Cain never uses either of these weapons, preferring his standard-issue laspistol and chainsword. In particular, the cover of Death or Glory shows him dual-wielding a pair of bolt pistols, which he does not do in the story.
