I’ve just purchased 2 of these, one for me and the other for my Dad and I must say I am very impressed with them! This package seemed like a good deal with the extra items that come with it, but alas, you get what you pay for. This is all something that an experienced user who has dealt with CHIRP software can easily overcome. If you are not in a terrible rush to get everything figured out all at once, and willing to have fun as you explore, this radio could be a great learning tool for your ham hobby.

Its handset mic works great and I think is a good value for what I want to do with it as a snow sports instructor.That being said, I only tested the power out on this radio as many have stated in their reviews that they didn't think it was actually putting out 8W but didn't have any way to confirm their suspicions. Inside the box, you’ll find the Sainsonic antenna (70 cm and 2m), a charging adapter, charging cradle, 10 volt car port charger, 2-prong earpiece with mic. But then something funny happened, I started using the Baofeng GT-3TP and found it was actually a pretty good radio! It wasn’t uncommon for me to receive on both Channel 0 and 1 at the same time, even though only one was selected and the second VFO was set to Channel 3.

The chargers are pretty standard Baofeng chargers, not anything special, although the radio does cradle much easier than the last one I had. Since then, I have been unable to contact the local repeater 600 ft/182 m high on an 800 ft/244 m high tower that is less than three miles from my house. If you have older kids, they will probably enjoy learning the different features and you don’t have to stress over them being rough with these units. The in-hand feel is pretty good although I find myself holding the Baofeng GT-3TP differently than most of my other radios and I really like the belt clip which is shaped a bit differently than standard and has a slot cut into it which helps with the whole sport look thing. Bottom line: you will get a nice radio with upgraded chipset, a few Watts more output power, a good antenna and good looks.I have no clue why the new drivers dont work and the chirp devs dont just add GT-3TP to the frikkin list, it seems so stupid…. If you are using these units as walkie talkies in fairly flat terrain you can easily get a range of 7+ miles.
