Baczewski Monopolowa began life as a Poland-based company – hence, the name translating to “monopoly” in Polish – but long ago was taken over by Austrian interests and, in fact, promotes itself as the “the purveyor to the Imperial Austrian and Royal Hungarian Court since 1810” on the label and is mostly known for their other products, primarily their vodka.

The sweet and intriguing flavour is achieved by using orange peel with a pinch of mixed herbs and spices, combined with triple-distilled potato spirit. Baczewski Whisky is an original spirit, distilled from a blend of grains according to a pre-war recipe. It used to be used for friendship ceremonies and it can be used at weddings for joining the two families. Producing delectable spirits based on traditional recipes, but using the latest machinery and equipment, the factory’s production capacity soon meant that every day almost seven standard-gauge railway trucks could be filled with its bottles.

By the late 1930s the company was exporting its exquisite spirits to almost all countries in Europe, as well as both the Americas and Australia. Nose: Plenty of summer honey, zesty citrus, heaps of fermenting orchard fruits and all dusted with a generous helping of icing sugar.
