It's a collection of his writings from the Daily Telegraph from book reviews to longer pieces on architecture and his pet subject of preserving old buildings. The staff have never been the most courteous or helpful but what does help is the roaring fireplace in the back on cold days, the garden on warm nights and the outdoor, street side tables.

Their polpette di lampredotto (above left) are out of this world and will convert even the most stubborn of non-offal eaters. I was surprised by Betjeman's liking for Art Nouveau and his fairly even-handed description of the new Coventry Cathedral designed by Basil Spence. Self love isn't something that always comes easily, it's something that takes time and work every single day.Overall I found this book fascinating, in particular the way that many of the little issues of 50 years still seem relevant. A few years ago one of my dearest friends – you – showed me another Florence and from that moment on I’ve been loving it because I was looking at the city from a new perspective. D. Salinger, through prescient warnings about the threat posed to the English skyline by office blocks, motorways and concrete lamp-standards, to elegiac paeans to Norman churches and, of course, the gothic majesty of St Pancras station, Lovely Bits of Old England collects the very best of Betjeman's contributions to the Telegraph for the first time. I thought this would be an ideal present for my sister in law, but on receiving it the print was so small that it made it very diffficult for an older person to read. Quattro Leoni has its merits – I’ve never been in love with this place, it’s a little touristy despite the local feel of this piazza, but I have often taken visitors here and they have always loved it.

All too often variety is hard to find in a singular release, so we have collected together 36 tracks, from 36 artists, into one easily accessible source. I raised the question with Better World Books and although they could not supply a hardcover version they were extremely generous in making up for the descepency. Elsewhere a couple of paragraphs are devoted to a notable work which is still in print today and much more space is devoted to a book I have never heard of.Solid nuggets of aural pleasure have been selected; Lakker's inspired ethereal bass music, rugged amplified tracks from Buddy Lee Dickens and H. Taken from all manner of musical circles, this collection of sounds goes a long way to representing every facet of the label's influence and output. The quality of the essays is a little variable, some were enjoyable and thought provoking whilst others were a little flat and uninspired. Via San Niccolò has still retained that local neighbourhood vibe, with plenty of restaurant choices, a couple of wine bars, a good bakery and a great deli-slash-eatery, Zeb (“Zuppa e Bollito,” a good spot for homemade goodness such as soups, pasta, panini – you can either take away or perch at the counter). In architecture, grand Victorian edifices were pulled down to make way for gleaming brutalist monuments to the Future.

Loved 😍 every single second of it, Smersonality, Beside The Past By A Lake, Sissy Growl, Poking Holes, Thousand Mile Stare, and Nestled were my favourites! Although critical of some aspects of the Cathedral, his focus is clearly on the briefing given to the architect resulting in a somewhat generic design aiming to be all things to all people rather than a confident expression of the Anglican faith. Now I enjoy walking in Florence in the evening, taking back roads to avoid the crowds, eating my gelato and spotting local places on the way. The book reviews cover a fairly wide range of fiction including what are now long forgotten novels alongside those regarded as classics. Then again, as Valeria says above, how can we deny such beauty to all and after all I am one of those tourists when I go back now too.
