Helen Nicoll was a television producer with the BBC for many years. It was here, as Producer of the children's educational series WATCH, that she first met Jan Pienkowski. After working together for four years, they decided it was time to preserve their creativity in book form for future generations of children to enjoy. The result is the immensely popular MEG AND MOG series. Sign up to my mailing list community and you won’t miss out on any special offers, teaching tips or new resources.

A humorous first 'chapters' book for newly independent readers or suitable for reading aloud to younger children. Pen and ink illustrations add interest and humour.Helen Nicoll was born in Natland, Westmorland, in 1937. She was educated at schools in Bristol, Devon and London. Nicoll married Robert Kime in 1970 and they had one daughter and one son. In 2001, an animated TV series of 52 five-minute episodes was planned to be produced as a co-production between Telemagination, TV-Loonland AG and Absolutely Productions for a 2002–2003 delivery, with Loonland holding Non-UK rights to the series. [2] The Meg and Mog books have been enjoyed by countless number of children for many years. The illustrations are wonderful if not a little retro and the words are written in a very exciting and interesting way. Little ones will be sure to be reading along with you and the story line is always creative. The text is short and simple, and the whimsical illustrations are stylized, uncluttered, and rendered in bright primary colors. The limited text and quirky artwork would make this a good Halloween book to share with younger readers. A nice book to read to children around Halloween. Does any of them celebrate Halloween? What do they dress up as?

In addition to the Meg and Mog series, Helen had a long and varied association with Puffin - as editor of the Junior Puffin magazine The Egg from 1977 - 1979, and as compiler of the popular children's poetry anthology Poems for Seven Year Olds and Under, illustrated by Michael Foreman. She owned and ran the audio company Cover to Cover for many years which produced the popular series of Puffin story tapes. Pieńkowski said in an interview that the series gave him the opportunity to turn monsters from his childhood into harmless toys. He took his palette from comic strips such as Desperate Dan and Dennis the Menace. This story is a great springboard into the topics of Clothes, Food, Animals and, of course, Halloween. There was an impatience and wonderful curiosity to him, as he looked for new ways to tell stories: drawing on his Polish roots with his cut-out and silhouette work; his extraordinary use of colour; his pioneering interest in drawing on the computer; and of course his award-winning pop-ups which challenged publishers and printers to find new ways to create his books.” This is our second Meg and Mog book. We started with Meg on the Moon because I'm a sci-fi geek. Fin (my 18-month old son) loves that one very much, so we decided to get him the original for Christmas. The British author Ed Vere, who is godson to Walser, said: “Jan Pieńkowski lived an inspiring life dedicated to making books of the very highest standard – pioneering, intelligent, beautifully considered, and always created with a mischievous sense of fun.” He added: “Full of love, curiosity, art, thought, enjoyment and laughter. He will be much missed, as a man, and as a towering figure in children’s books.”

Meg and Mog is a great book, full of great illustrations and fun bright colours. The book is easy to follow and has some really captivating colours. There are lots of comic style speech bubbles. Every toy or animal in Sophie's sight is given a horn, and because she is a unicorn expert, she teaches them about magic, hunting and other important unicorn things. But Sophie is a little too busy teaching her “unicorns” to even notice a when a real one shows up... Pieńkowski’s work was often inspired by his Polish childhood and experiences as a wartime refugee. His interest in paper cut-outs stemmed from his time in an air raid shelter in Warsaw, where a soldier had kept him amused by cutting newspapers into shapes for him.
