Playing for Rangers was one of the highlights of my career so it is always a privilege to relive that experience and to do so for a match celebrating our 150th anniversary makes it even more special. Davie Cooper was an immensely elegant winger who thrilled Rangers supporters for 12 years with his creativity. The forward even dazzled his opponents as Dutch hero Ruud Gullit named Cooper in his ‘Perfect XI’ in 2007. They had met as Rangers and Feyenoord played a friendly. Souness was confident in Ferguson being a success in England as he had taken up Rangers’ captaincy at only 22 years old. He also won the SFWA Player of the Year award in 1999/2000 and 2002/03. The final year of Ferguson’s first spell at Ibrox also saw Rangers win the treble. But these matches are a reminder that the talent these players were blessed with can still come to the fore when the opportunity arises. There were still moments for the class to shine. Rangers will be captained by Light Blue hero Barry Ferguson and joined by other fan favourites including 55 league title winning Jermain Defoe, Saša Papac, Kris Boyd and Michael Mols.

Around 30,000 were in attendance in Govan today for the game with all money raised during the match going to charity. The quality of football may not have been up the standards that some of the players performed at, indeed at times the game went down to a walking pace but as always during occasions like the one today charity is the real winner. Rangers recognised Tavernier, plus fellow modern-day legends Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, for their iconic contributions. Tavernier joined the club whilst they were competing in the Scottish Championship and helped to secure the title in his debut campaign at the club. RANGERS LEGENDS: Waterreus, Papac, Alves, Amoruso, Hutton, Ferguson, Mendes, McCann, De Boer, Defoe, MillerJermaine Defoe put in a man of the match performance but it wasn't enough for the Rangers Legends to see off a World XI. Injuries and poor form would blight his final days in Glasgow as they had in Rome. But the larger-than-life character announced himself as a future Rangers legend in the only suitable way by ending a lung-busting run from his own box to meet McCoist’s cross and beat Celtic. Alex McLeish was in the dug-out for the Light Blues with Robbie Fowler taking charge of the visitors but charity was the real winner on the day with a crowd of around 30,000 turning out. The celebrations had started on Saturday evening as Rangers hosted a ‘Night of Legends’ at New Edmiston House. The likes of Alex McLeish, Arthur Numan and Jorg Albertz took to the stage alongside broadcaster Emma Dodds to tell tales of title triumphs and relive the treasured memories from their glittering Ibrox careers. The forward from Hamilton left a lasting impression on those he played with and against as a master of control. Cooper dictated where the ball went and glid beyond defenders with ease at the drop of his shoulder. While his wonderful left foot fashioned a host of precise crosses.

I’m looking forward to captaining a team that will include former World Cup, Champions League and Ballon D’Or winners and best of all, the weekend will raise important funds for my foundation which supports children around the globe.” The Rangers Legends squad is presented by Rangers’ Official Event Supplier, 5 Stars, and is set to feature some of our biggest and most loved Legends. There would have been several thousands in the stands who were not even born when those on the park were in their pomp at Ibrox. This was still a day for supporters young and old to enjoy, however, as some of the greats of yesteryear pulled on their boots once again. SUBS: Carroll, Arveladze, Wallace, Jelavic, Boyd, Vignal, Hendry, Rae, Albertz, Lovenkrands, Andrews, Johansson, Cousin, Beattie

MORE RANGERS STORIES

Figo's countryman Nuno Gomes then flipped the scoreline on its head when he beat Neil Alexander in the home goal with an excellent. Greig established himself firmly as a Rangers legend during a storied spell at Ibrox from 1961 to 1978. The defender graduated from Rangers’ academy and helped the Glasgow giants go on to lift several trophies. He would eventually retire as a five-time Scottish top-flight winner.

RANGERS Football Club will celebrate becoming the first major European club to reach their 150th anniversary by hosting a galaxy of superstars for a Weekend of Legends, presented by Unibet, in March 2022. Duncan Ferguson stuns Sheffield Wednesday for first Forest Green Rovers win as he vows they CAN beat the drop Rangers then opened the scoring just short of the quarter of an hour mark. Alan Hutton played a delightful cross into the path of Jermain Defoe and, in typical fashion, he was ice cold in front of goal as he took the ball out of the air with his left foot before chipping the ball over David James from close range to put the Gers ahead.FOLLOWING a hugely successful Weekend of Legends last season, Rangers are delighted to announce that the Weekend of Legends II, presented in partnership with 5 Stars, will take place in March 2023. As part of the weekend’s activities, we also look forward to supporting the Rangers Charity Foundation and the 150th Anniversary Appeal. On Sunday March 26, a star-studded Rangers Legends squad will play a World Legends squad full of global talent at Ibrox stadium at 2pm.
