Delivery information: If you buy a soundbar or DVD/Blu-ray player along with this TV, please note that they'll be delivered separately. Its premium look metal bezel is extremely narrow so your eyes naturally focus on the picture, not what's around it However, as with all of Sony’s 2021 OLEDs (even the flagship models), only two of the HDMI inputs support 4K/120Hz and ALLM (auto low latency mode). Since one of these inputs also supports eARC, that means anyone with both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 consoles could find themselves unable to enjoy the benefits of both simultaneously. There’s also no support for VRR (variable refresh rate), but this feature is expected to be added via an imminent firmware update.

But detail levels, sharpness and clarity are all very strong, the intricate patterns on Doctor Strange’s cloak are impressively defined and detailed; the production design of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is brought to life with excellent clarity and high levels of insight in the IMAX presentation of the film on Disney+. Reset: Resets all the Picture Adjustments settings to the factory settings excluding Setting Memory, Picture Mode and Advanced Settings. The A80J is the step-down model from the A90J, which is still one of our favourite TVs, and this entry-level OLED covers similar ground to the 2021 flagship, the differences not quite as large as you might expect between the two.

You work at BID, what a legend.

UK buyers will be pleased to learn that while they were absent at launch, the UK's core catch-up apps are now all supported by the A80J, and both Now and BT Sport are also on board. Converted to Test Bench 1.10. With this update we've revamped our Gradient testing, added a new test for Low Quality Content Smoothing, and expanded our Audio Passthrough testing. This screen has four times the number of pixels than Full HD TVs, delivering stunning realism, natural motion and incredible detail. High Dynamic Range expands light, dark, and every colour in between for a picture that's closer to real life. This set supports multiple HDR formats including Dolby Vision. And just because the A80J isn’t as bassy or spacious as its much more expensive sibling doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound very good by TV standards. It’s certainly weightier and more controlled at the bottom end than the LG C1 and G1, for example, and significantly punchier and more dynamic, too.

Buy It Direct Ltd is a limited company registered in England. Registered number 04171412. Registered office: Unit A Trident Business Park, Leeds Road, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, HD2 1UA. I measured input lag at 16.3ms, which in the grand scheme of things is very good, though short of Samsung and LG, with even Panasonic ahead in the gaming stakes with their performance and features. While the A80J’s system is referred to as Acoustic Surface Audio+, just like the A90J’s, it actually has just half as much power (a total of 30W rather than 60W), and that is made clear in the presentation. Not that the A80J isn’t capable of going loud, because it is, but it doesn’t have quite as much depth or weight to its delivery, either in obviously bassy moments, such as the opening of chapter two of Blade Runner 2049, or simply in deeper voices, such as that of Sapper Morton (Dave Bautista). The A80J doesn’t offer quite as much width in its sonic delivery as the A90J either, although there’s not a lot in it.

The Sony Bravia XR A80J’s choice combination of features and next-generation technologies make it a winner

Advanced screen-speaker technology with Cognitive Processor XR turns any sound source into an immersive sound experience. Hear sound more clearly and accurately, whatever you're watching. Enjoy entertainment in a whole new way with sound and picture in perfect harmony. The Sony A80J is a good TV for gaming, but not perfect. For a start, there’s the previously mentioned problem of only having two inputs that support 4K/120Hz and ALLM. There’s also no support for VRR, but that should be added soon, and there’s a tendency to dim the image when a HUD has been on screen for a while. This is obviously to avoid issues with image retention or screen burn but can become annoying if you’re prone to marathon gaming sessions. In case it helps anyone, here is how I have improved it, at least for my ears. I used the equaliser in the classic smiley settings (as described here) which helped. Maximising the surround effect seems to work well and I also turned off Dolby compression. With its feet the A80J does its best Optimus Prime impression as it can transform into three different configurations. You could plant the feet out wide, or have them seated in the middle, or if there’s a soundbar to fit, configure them into an elevated position. There is the option of wall-mounting, the 53mm depth of the TV is not bad for an OLED, but both LG’s OLEDs and Samsung’s Mini LEDs edge it in those stakes. Interface

version 4.2;HID (mouse/keyboard connectivity)/HOGP (Low Energy device connectivity)/SPP(Serial Port Profile)/A2DP (stereo audio) 2 /AVRCP (AV remote control)As ever when buying a TV, sound’s just as important as picture quality if you want the ultimate movie watching experience, and here is where the BRAVIA range also excels. Now, if Sony played the Samsung game, of not putting Dolby Vision in their sets, I wouldn't buy it. Updated to Test Bench 1.7 with an updated HDR Brightness test that better reflects real world usage. We've also split the console compatibility boxes into separate PS5 Compatibility and Xbox Series X|S Compatibility tests. You can see our full changelog here.
