We conducted all of our tests at the maximum 16-megapixel Superfine setting, though the camera's factory settings are at 14-megapixel Fine shots by default. This is a selection of sample images from the Samsung MV800 camera, which were all taken using the 16 megapixel SuperFine JPEG setting. We've been shooting Google's two newest smartphones on two continents: from the parks of Madrid to the mountains of Washington state and the streets of Seattle.

If point and shoot's your thing, then you'll be delighted with the new Samsung NV800, which offers by far the most hand-holding features that we've ever seen on a compact camera, coupled with a great touchscreen that largely succeeds in mimicking a smartphone. Nice, i'm sure it will be a hit with teen girls now you can take Duck face pictures of yourself and send it straight to your facebook profile via Wi-Fi. Fujifilm's newest camera aims to bring modern AF, improved sensor stabilization and video recording technology into the medium format realm. Plenty of casual photographers seem to prefer a slightly oversaturated quality in their shots, since it makes the sky bluer, the grass greener, and flowers more vibrant. The signal-to-noise ratio hits an uncomfortable level around ISO 400, which is pretty early, but the shots are still decent, if a bit grainy.

Staying briefly with the other ‘sensible’ shooting modes, there’s a Touch Shot that enables you to select a point of focus and take a picture simply by touching the screen, a Self Shot mode for self-portraits, a Night Shot that allows you to control the shutter speed and aperture for long exposures (over one second), a Dual IS mode for sharper results at slower shutter speeds, a Close Up macro mode and a 3D picture mode (3D viewing device sold separately). Saturation is actually adjustable, which could even out the intensity, and there are some additional shooting modes especially for portraits. Beauty Shot can smooth over blemishes—a little or a lot, whichever the user wants to choose, thanks to adjustable parameters. Essentially the 3-inch screen is hinged on top of the body and can be rotated through 180 degrees, so as well as acting as a normal LCD screen on the rear, it can be rotated to face forward in the same direction as the lens, perfect for self-portraits.

The MultiView screen accomplishes the same thing with a different approach, and also makes it more comfortable to frame high- and low-angle shots than a fixed LCD could.

The extra shutter button behind the LCD doesn't seem like it should make a big impact, but it's actually a helpful, convenient touch. After all, the MV800 is clearly targeted at young sociable users who are likely to want to share their images with all their friends. Does photography attract the depressed or is it the quest for an unattainable perfection that depresses? It feels a bit silly dedicating a whole section to this one button, but we didn't know where else to include it in the review: When the LCD is flipped up, it reveals an auxiliary shutter button on the rear panel. Inevitably perhaps we managed to get occasional instances of visible camera shake when shooting handheld at the maximum telephoto setting.
