Description

You are going to be able to watch these time after time without any degradation in picture or sound quality and the other main benefit is being able to jump to whatever episode, or indeed scene, that you want — no more forwarding or rewinding tapes. All twelve episodes of John Cleese and Connie Booth's highly successful comedy series, set in a Torquay hotel. These two are both interviewed by the same young guy who didn't strike me as being a typical Fawlty fan, if he is then I apologise in advance. I get a small commission on purchases made after following the links above which pays for the hosting, etc. In 'Waldorf Salad', some newly-arrived American guests' request for transatlantic cuisine does not go down well with Basil in the kitchen.

Scales's Sybil is the genial but obliviously chatty voice of reason and Andrew Sachs mangles the English language as the Spanish bellhop Manuel, whose struggles with simple directions results in comic lunacy reminiscent of Robert Benigni. Each of the series discs also has the option of a commentary by the director (series one: John Howard Davies, series two: Bob Spiers). The two other interviews are shorter: the Andrew Sachs interview is around 15 minutes and the interview with Prunella is even shorter. The Artist Profiles are in two sections: the main characters and the others who starred as guests etc. There's some particularly good writing in the last three episodes, "The Kipper and the Corpse", "The Anniversary" and "Basil the Rat", which are larger in scale than the rest of the series.

Including favourite characters Basil, Sybil and Manuel, you can even see images of the characters and scenes as you hear their funniest lines.

Fawlty Towers" is a good show, although its reputation has a tendency to get blown out of proportion (for instance, actor David Kelly proclaims in the extras that Basil Fawlty is "the funniest character ever broadcast on television anywhere in the world"). Series 1 episodes are: 'A Touch of Class', 'The Builders', 'The Wedding Party', 'The Hotel Inspectors', 'Gourmet Night' and 'The Germans'.
