It sounds like the grain has raised after being wetted with water. This is where the soft grain of the wood swells after absorbing water whereas the denser, harder grain does not. Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints are ideal because they colour and protect the wood in the same application. It is always good to try and finish with a clear coat if possible because if the wood gets scratched it is the clear coat that scratches before the coloured coat and therefore the scratch is not as noticeable. You may find that this is what has occurred on your banister and I would think that sanding may be the best way to restore the natural colour of the wood. If the effect has penetrated fairly deeply then a Fiddes Oxalic Acid Crystals may also be worth considering, a test area is strongly advised. Once the doors have been sanded, they can be re-finished with either a wood oil or varnish that contains UV filters or stabilisers. This will help to protect the wood and will slow down the colour bleaching process caused by the suns UV rays, a little like suntan cream.

You can use either, the main thing to remember is that you must de-grease with something like sugar soap and allow to dry thoroughly before applying oil or woodstains..... Yes! French oak is valued because it has several characteristic features, such as saw marks and rough spots from early sawmills, adding to its vintage appearance. Compared to other types of flooring, each French oak plank has a unique look and history, giving any room a rustic, old-world feel. Before we do the actual polishing, I would like to talk about the finish. The finish itself is a alcohol based finish called 'Shellac'. Shellac is a resin formed from lac bugs in south east Asia. The resin is processed and sold as dry flakes(see picture). There are many different shades of shellac flakes available online. The color varies from gold amber to deep brown caramel. I bought my shellac flakes through this company. This advised is based on the wood having no current treatments applied. The preservative is likely to darken the wood slightly and a test area is recommended to ensure you like to darkened appearance. You could also consider application of a penetrative oil to offer some further protection, although I would recommend doing this a little further down the line when you are sure the wood is fully dry and there will be no more mould issue. This attention to detail also applies when you specify reclaimed French oak for your hardwood flooring. Antique beams and other structures (that have stood the test of time) can be transformed into beautiful floor planks. These seasoned sources of French oak hardwood flooring are often hand turned, meaning the work to create the planks is an exacting process. After every 4 or 5 applications the work should be left to harden for a couple of hours before applying further coats. We recommend lightly rubbing the surface down between coats with 320 grit abrasive paper or Ultra Fine Steel Wool (0000) to remove any blemishes. You may also want to consider a slightly thinner oil, more suited for hardwoods called Osmo Wood Wax Extra Thin whilst the Polyx Oil can be used for most wood types the Extra Thin can be easier and just as protective to use.

If both sides of the frames are well sealed with durable products then there really should not be too much of an issue to be had here. It is further down the line when one starts to wear and the other does not that the issue may become more obvious and ensuring good maintenance will help to avoid future problems. It has been allowed to grow slowly (unlike American Oak for example) to maximise density, strength and other natural performance characteristics. After you charge the finishing pad and it is ready to be used, you can start the french polishing; finally!Button Polish is light brown in colour and is ideal for use on light woods such as elm and light mahogany. The first applications of polish are made by passing the rubber up and down, working along the grain of the wood and slightly overlapping the previous pass. These first few coats will act as a seal, ready for the further coats and are known as fading up. If the rubber feels as if it is dragging squeeze the sides very gently to push more polish onto the face, or ease up on the pressure being applied to the rubber. After one session is done, examine your piece under a light and see if there's any scratches or uneven shellac build ups. To fix the unevenness, take a 800 grit wet-and-dry sand paper, sand the surface with soap water. You should be able to see that all the high spots are sanded and eventually the surface is flat. It will have a predictable level of character, natural features and colour variation according to the detailed French Oak grading system.

Thank you for getting in touch with your enquiry. Whilst Vinegar is good for many things, I would not necessarily recommend it for cleaning wood, although it depends on the type of vinegar you use, as it can react with the wood. You can use it to clean if thinned down or simply add a small amount to warm soapy water if that is what you are using to clean your floor with. Undiluted Vinegar and steel wool are often used to create a treatment that ages the wood, giving a silvered appearance or a natural patina. Our last tip for French oak hardwood flooring is possibly our favorite. Enjoy it! Don’t be tempted to fill your room with furniture or scatter rugs. You’ve provided your home with a statement floor, a thing of beauty, so let everyone see it. You should also encourage people to walk across it barefoot too, to see how soothing, warm and comfortable it is! What type of wood floor lasts the longest? leaner is recommended. On the other hand, it may be the silvering that needs removing. If so, a scrub with You could consider a product such as the Osmo Country Colour this is a penetrating oil that gives an opaque paint like look and may be better matched to an oiled finish on the inside. Both sides then being Microporous and better suited to expansion and retraction of the wood.

When this happens some or all of the oil may have dried in the surface and this will offer little protection and is probably why it is marking so easily. Unfortunately the only way to resolve this will be to remove the current oil and re sand to a 120 – 150 grit, to open up the grain, wipe over with Methylated spirits and re apply the oil. If you want to get an idea of how the wood will look with the ‘clear (420)’, simply dampen a section of the wood with a clean cloth and some water. This gives a fairly good representation of how the wood will look once oiled. So if after a year the finish is starting to look a little dry and tired then a top up coat to a clean dry surface will help. Depending on the exposure a year might be too soon and the wood will not be ready to accept more oil, so wait another year and look again. Make sure to sand between each session in early stages, so the shellac builds up evenly. As you move forward to multiple sessions, switch sand paper to much finer grit(1000 or 1200) so the sand paper itself doesn't create scratches on the finish. Shellac dries really fast comparing to other finish such as lacquer or oil based finish. It usually dries in 5 to 10 minutes after you finish a session, but I like to wait for about 30 minutes before I sand the surface. Clear wax polish is the one exception to the above… If a clear wax polish is applied to bare oak (or just about any other wood for that matter) then the colour is kept very natural indeed, it’s just a question of whether a wax polish is going to be durable enough. Internal doors, for example, are considered, by most people, to be ideal for finishing with wax, whereas a floor will look nice once waxed but regular maintenance is required, so most people don’t opt for wax for this reason.

It is also fair to say that the application of a colour will improve the protection and appearance longer than a clear product will, the pigments are great UV filters and so you could take a look at the Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain as Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain option for this. Should I apply finishing oil or woodstain? Not sure what the difference is. I want it to feel smooth to the touch. Firstly, let’s look at exactly what French oak hardwood flooring is, and the reasons it’s such a wise choice for homeowners.Thank you for getting in touch with your enquiry. I can recommend a great product for you to have a look at that will maintain the natural appearance of the wood, Fiddes Hard Wax oil Natural this contains a minute amount of white pigment to counteract the darkening that you get with a standard clear oil. Blonde De-waxed Shellac Flakes produce a light transparent coloured French polish. Used for antique restoration and on light coloured woods. As our installation and care guide shows (see above), any wood flooring is wonderfully uncomplicated once it’s in place. It comes down to a few simple measures that can protect the integrity and beauty of your wood flooring. This includes using a soft brush to regularly remove any dirt and grit that drags in on feet. Clean the surface of your French oak hardwood flooring with a soft mop too – preferably a microfiber one.
