So I had a look and rang a lady called Sarah asking for advice which was duly given in a friendly and not condescending way and a 15 m lead arrived with a couple of days…it was well made, nice and wide at 25mm with good quality clips, padded handle and a brilliant new to me but so simple and obvious”double up” which basically means if you start with a 7.5m lead you can immediately let it out to 15m(hence the double up) to give your pooch a nice long run and still be in control…and vice versa. Technically, you can train your dog with any kind of lead providing it can give you the right amount of control over your pup! No lead can safely run through your hand at speed without getting a burn, so common sense, lead usage skills and the correct length are important factors. Always do a risk assessment to determine the correct lead length. As you can see in the product options, you can choose a padded handle for your comfort. Safe use of dog training leads After lead length, the other most important thing to consider is the type of collar or harness you are using.

Unlike a lot of other training leads, the Elite Spanker also offers an adjustable length of between 1.2 and 1.5m, which allows you to experiment with short to medium ranges and give them some experience of controlled walking from further distances. If you are teaching your dog not to pull on the lead, there is naturally going to be some tension and a few yanks here and there as you practice reigning your dog closer to your side. Its unique bungee style cord extends around 12 inches when pulled, which helps reduce the sudden force acting on both you and your dog. This helps you stay in control and crucially, also helps reduce the risk of injury and increase comfort for your pup! The primary purpose of a dog training lead is to keep the dog safely attached to the handler while allowing for communication and control. They play a crucial role in teaching obedience, leash manners, and ensuring the safety of both the dog and the handler. A well-designed training lead can significantly aid in shaping desired behaviors and preventing undesirable ones. When you’re looking for the best dog lead, consider the following to help you make the best choice for you and your dog: Type of Lead Long line: Long lines are extended training leads that can range from 10 to 160 feet in length. They are useful for training recall, distance commands, and off-leash training in controlled environments such as parks or open spaces. Long lines provide more freedom for dogs while still giving handlers the ability to maintain control if necessary. Long-lines come in a variety of lengths, from 3 metres all the way up to 30, and it’s important to take the time to get used to holding them properly. They usually have a handle at the end, but you can buy ones without. Long-line leads are a fixed length and are more robust than the retractable long leads you can also buy. They also come in different materials for different sized dogs. For example, a light-weight fabric long-line would be more suitable for a small dog as it won’t weigh them down, but for a larger dog you could look at a biothane, grippy material or a heavy-duty webbing as it’s more robust. Whatever you choose, it’s important to make sure you can hold it comfortably in your hand and that if it pulls through your fingers it’s not going to hurt you.

In terms of name recall training and slightly longer lines, we would suggest the Company of Animals CLIX Recall Line lead for dogs. This is the only lead on our list and one of the few in the world that has been specifically designed to cater to this form of training. Given COA’s dog training and behaviour centre is one of the most celebrated and respected of it’s kind in the UK, we’d be fools not to suggest their very own training lead! What length of dog training lead do I need? metres – any size dog but especially smaller dogs, 19mm is a suitable width for small dogs and due to its’ durability, works well with any size dog.

Basting 2.4 tonnes of resistance pull, you really can’t beat Hunters set for pure strength and the added collar with anti-abrasion and friction material ensures your pup is never hurt or irritated by your more strict guidance at the helm of the lead! If your dog isn’t well lead trained, retractable leads may not be suitable because they give you less control and can encourage negative behaviour. However, if your dog is well lead trained and you use the lead appropriately, retractable leads can give dogs freedom and be a positive addition to your walks. Conclusion This is a painless alternative and great for training as by diverting their gaze, it can teach dogs who are easily distracted and excited to focus more on the task at hand. Dog training leads, also known as leashes or leads, are essential tools for teaching and managing a dog’s behavior. They come in various lengths, materials, and styles, and are designed to provide control and guidance during training sessions and everyday walks. The length of dog lead you require is entirely dependent on the form of training you want to do and the training environment at your disposal.

Partnering up a perfect pooch training lead with an even better collar, this heavy-duty polyamide set from Hunter is an idyllically crafted anti-pull leash that is superb for close-quarters lead training. Long-line leads are great in big open spaces, but it’s important to be aware of your surroundings as they can be a trip hazard for others and can get caught up in the environment around you.A dog training lead is typically made of a strong and durable material such as nylon or leather and comes in various lengths and designs to suit different training purposes. In general, most training leads tend to be shorter in length to give you maximum control and teach your dog how to walk on a lead and reduce pulling. These will often be around 1m – 2m and are fantastic for training dogs in preparation for busy or built-up areas where they are less free to roam. Biothane is an interesting and newly popular material which consists of polyester and a special coating which makes it odourless and anti-fungal. This stops it from getting dirty and harbouring bacteria, making it a slightly more weatherproof option. It has a smooth, leather-like feel, but is crucially a lot more resistant!

Training and Behavior Modification: Dog training leads play a crucial role in obedience training and behavior modification programs. They aid in teaching basic commands such as sit, stay, and heel, as well as more advanced exercises like recall or loose-leash walking. With a lead, handlers can guide their dogs through desired behaviors, reinforce positive actions, and discourage undesirable behaviors through gentle corrections or redirects. At 2m in length, it’s slightly longer than standard short training leashes, but it’s strength and durability make it far and away the most robust lead on this whole list. metres – same as 10 metres, ideal for where you have more space. Better for advanced recall training (allowing more distance between dog and handler), also a good length for dogs who are rarely or never allowed off lead.
