He has strange flashes of memory: of another, much smaller, town surrounded by green fields; of a second mother, a human mother; of a much younger woman and a little girl in a house at the end of a narrow muddy lane. The film's human actors acquit themselves admirably under the circumstances, but there's no question that the stars are Comet (as Fluke) and Barney (as Rumpo), bolstered by excellent trainers and special-effects personnel. There are chases and fights between cat and dog that end up with all the crockery getting broken, Victoria making her escape through a glass window and Fluke doing the same in another instance.

He was one of our greatest popular novelists, whose books are sold in thirty-three other languages, including Russian and Chinese. It all comes together at the ending which may leave you with a few theological thoughts and with you probably not being able to look at your dog in the same way again!

His first home is not a bad one either: true, he makes all the usual puppy-mistakes—crapping on the bedroom carpet and innocently shredding a pile of female clothing—but there are also warm evenings in front of the fire and a lawn to race, jump and roll about on during the long sunny days. The tale was later adapted into the film ‘Fluke’ (1995) which was directed by Carlo Carlei and stuck relatively closely with the original storyline. His first novel, The Rats, was an instant best-seller and is now recognised as a classic of popular contemporary fiction. From here emotions run raw, with Fluke’s struggle to accept his new life, his departure from his old life, and ultimately severing his emotional ties with his previous family. We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there’s something for every literary palate.

I had read The Fog, The Rats and The Lair, by James Herbert, and I was kind of expecting the same thing ; a horror / thriller.

I guess the plot morphs from a canine reincarnation through to a murder whodunnit - with the obligatory twist at the end. At the time I quite liked the ‘Rat’ novels but even then I preferred his less bloody ones such as ‘Jonah’ or ‘The Spear’. What would be your reaction, if one day you woke up and found yourself trapped inside the body of a dog?Emanuel Levy of Variety stated, "The adventure doesn't pander to kids, though toward the end it gets overly emotional, milking every situation with lengthy reaction shots and cute closeups of Fluke" and "all three adults — Modine, Travis and Stoltz — otherwise accomplished and attractive performers, assume secondary status to the gorgeous dog and his loyal benefactor, Pomeranc. I've talked with, eaten with, and played with so many different species my head aches trying to remember them all. Fluke was released on VHS on November 21, 1995 and LaserDisc on November 28, 1995 by MGM/UA Home Video in North America (which was presented in the theatrical version and available exclusively through Warner Home Video). Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975.
