This is a remarkably solid and engaging little book about one entrepreneur's decision to take on the banking system. Now one man, fed up with never-ending tales of greed and corruption, sets out to prove that there is a different way of doing things - by opening his own bank to help inject much-needed life into local businesses. Since the first series of the Channel 4 series aired in 2012, Fishwick has continued to lobby Parliament to reform the UK's banking system, which has received support from former Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP, who supported the idea of a bank looking to "serve and grow the local economy rather than just for profit and serving the shareholders".

It’s true that Dave Fishwick, a Burnley man who had built his business empire selling vans and minibuses, set up Burnley Savings and Loans – a company whose slogan is ‘Bank on Dave! Channel 4 documentary Bank Of Dave, which aired in 2012, chronicled how Dave, and his right hand man David Henshaw, took on the elitist financial institutions of London and fought to receive the first, new banking licence to be issued in Britain in more than 100 years. The movie is being directed by award-winning up and coming director, Chris Foggin, who made the British feel good film Fisherman's Friends, also based on a true story about a folk music group from Port Isaac, Cornwall. Only recently, a school wrote to him asking for a loan for an industrial-sized toaster so they could feed hungry children breakfast before school – he quickly donated not only the toaster but a year’s supply of food. Now one man, fed up with never-ending tales of greed and corruption, sets out to prove that there is a different way of doing things.

The world and his wife were telling me I couldn't be a bank if I didn't have a banking licence, that preserve of the stinking rich and the banking elite. These adverts enable local businesses to get in front of their target audience – the local community. Billed by Dave himself as the “first Hollywood film ever to premiere outside London”, the debut showing was attended by Rory Kinnear and Jo Hartley, who plays Dave’s wife Nicola, as well as MPs for Burnley and Pendle, Anthony Higginbotham and Andrew Stephenson. Talking to The Sun, he revealed he recently donated equipment and food to a school to make breakfasts for its pupils. He took matters into his own hands, setting up a bank, presenting a hugely successful and award-winning Channel Four programme and publishing a best-selling book, though there were plenty of big hurdles along the way.The ability to comment on our stories is a privilege, not a right, however, and that privilege may be withdrawn if it is abused or misused. The humour that filtered through coupled with the practical nuggets of sage advice applicable in any industry/ business/ venture was much appreciated. Starring Rory Kinnear, of James Bond fame, Joel Fry who is most famous for being in Plebs, and Phoebe Dynevor, daughter of Coronation Street legend Sally Dynevor, the film was projected to be the next feel-good British movie of the decade, and it didn’t disappoint. Speaking to The Guardian about his role of Dave, Rory Kinnear said "There was something about his tenacity of spirit and purpose, as well as him being equally filled by rage and goodwill.

That said, Fishwick does still take issue with how the UK banking system operates and has been actively lobbying parliament for banking reforms for over a decade. So given the premise of this and it's setting in Burnley don't expect a glitzy Hollywood style setting. I just loved the British TV programme about this chap who wanted to set up his own little bank in his home town of Burnley in Lancashire.

Who knows, maybe life will imitate art, and the Bank of Dave will finally become a reality after all? As the movie cheekily states, Bank of Dave is the "true(ish) story" as it adds some creative flourishes to make Dave's story even more heartwarming. Filming is starting at the end of the month, much of which will take place in his beloved home town. Dave meets Dee Lazzerini and Steve Woodford, who have put their life savings on a place in Poole, and Sam and Elise in Winchester, who are sitting on a potential goldmine.

The book is written in the same, chatty, down-to-earth style, and I really enjoyed it, and certainly wish him every success in the future. We may receive a commission payment from the finance provider if you decide to enter into an agreement with them. But perhaps the most significant area in which the film differs from reality is regarding Dave's application to become an officially regulated bank. Self-made millionaire, Dave Fishwick, will help ordinary people to ‘get rich quick in a new 7 x 30-minute features series for Channel 4. My dream is for small 'banks' like mine to spring up all over the country, and to go back to a system of banking that's focused on people, not bonuses. Since the Channel 4 Series "Bank Of Dave" and the popular "Get Rich Quick" series the cameras and filming just hasn't stopped as Dave continues to help the british public save money and find the best deals.
