Description

In this pleasurable volume that’s just right for uncertain times, Klassen proves himself a top-notch student of the way that conscious beings seek to take charge of their own realities—efforts that nearly always fail and, in this world, are sometimes punctuated by falling rocks. What are you supposed to do when this giant rock falls and you have no explanation for it anytime soon… but it’s in our yard now? The story is very simple, the artwork is remarkable and the story itself has a kind of sophistication that adults and kids both love. If picture books have been breaking down the fourth wall for years, why not break out the experimental theatrical performances?

Children’s Books: ‘The Rock from the Sky’ Review - WSJ Children’s Books: ‘The Rock from the Sky’ Review - WSJ

Een prentenboek dat zeer knap in elkaar steekt en voor verschillende leeftijden anders geïnterpreteerd zal worden door de ingebrachte lag Although I don't think that The Rock from the Sky is quite the equal of some of Klassen's earlier books, I really enjoyed it, probably because I appreciate the comedic timing of his characters' dialogue, and the deadpan sense of humor of the story overall. I don’t think you’d go out of your way to say that Klassen was the most emotive illustrator out there.Merging broad visual suspense with wry wit and existential silliness, celebrated picture-book creator Jon Klassen gives us a wholly original comedy for the ages. Klassen wrote three picture books about animals and their hats and has since spent the rest of his time illustrating books by a variety of cool authors. B. White Read-Aloud Award winner and a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book; This Is Not My Hat, winner of the Caldecott Medal and the Kate Greenaway Medal; and We Found a Hat. My initial impression, with some puzzlement, was that the rock from the sky was a meteor, such as the one that may have made the dinosaurs extinct, or the one they are talking about maybe, though not likely any time soon, and maybe not, going to hit our planet. Wacky, witty fun, this could be used to introduce a unit on humor, all done in classic Klassen digital and watercolor tones and shapes.

The Rock from the Sky is a strange and weird children’s picture book, but if you have read author Jon Klassen’s work before you will understand that this is his style. In the first story, the turtle expresses great satisfaction at standing in his favorite spot, right beside a flower in an otherwise flat and featureless landscape. But the character is feeling something, and the audience has to figure out what he’s feeling, what he might be feeling. He also created illustrations for the popular series The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place and served as an illustrator on the animated feature film Coraline (2009). The artwork is vintage Klassen, with a sort of muted but expressive style that everyone seems to want to imitate these days. The audience has to do work there, because the character is probably going through something, but doesn’t want to show it. It is three-legged, and so a “wonky donkey” that, on further examination, has but one eye and so is a “winky wonky donkey” with a taste for country music and therefore a “honky-tonky winky wonky donkey,” and so on to a final characterization as a “spunky hanky-panky cranky stinky-dinky lanky honky-tonky winky wonky donkey.

A hilarious meditation on the workings of friendship, fate, shared futuristic visions, and that funny feeling you get that there’s something off somewhere, but you just can’t put your finger on it. Klassen’s deadpan humor—in picture books such as ‘I Want My Hat Back’ (2011) and ‘We Found a Hat’ (2016)—has an existential bleakness that elementary-school-age kids for some reason find incredibly funny. Parents need to know that The Rock from the Sky is a charmingly funny, delightfully illustrated tale from Caldecott-winning author Jon Klassen that's great for reading aloud. Using his signature deadpan humor and charming illustrations, the Caldecott-winning creator of the Hat Trilogy brings us a new story.I submitted them, along with a third story at the end that was a very condensed version of We Found a Hat, so three stories altogether, thinking that the collection could make up a third hat book. Laugh-out-loud funny; children will be predicting, warning, and laughing their way through any reading and multiple rereadings of this tour de force from a master of the picture book form. All will surely love his latest, The Rock from the Sky (Walker), a picture book in five vignettes with a distinct, absurdist flavour and Klassen’s trademark muted palette. Klassen at his droll best, in five short chapters that are outstanding examples of pacing, less-is-more illustration, and comedic timing.
