Substitute Dyes: a Tintex dye from the same colour family can be used in a new dye formula. Colour results may vary depending on how light/dark the substituted colour is and how much dyed is used in the formula (example: cardinal red, scarlet red, tangerine orange). One of the stars in the Pleiades, called Pleione, is sometimes called Purple Pleione because, being a fast spinning star, it has a purple hue caused by its blue-white color being obscured by a spinning ring of electrically excited red hydrogen gas. [69]

The Roman mythographer Julius Pollux, writing in the 2ndcenturyAD, asserted ( Onomasticon I, 45–49) that the purple dye was first discovered by the philosopher Heracles of Tyre, or rather, by his dog, whose mouth was stained purple from chewing on snails along the coast at Tyre. This story was depicted by Peter Paul Rubens in his painting Hercules' Dog Discovers Purple Dye. According to John Malalas, the incident happened during the reign of the legendary King Phoenix of Tyre, the eponymous progenitor of the Phoenicians, and therefore he was the first ruler to wear Tyrian purple and legislate on its use. [26]Natural dyes usually imply safe and environmentally friendly but that isn’t always the case with natural dyes and in some cases are less so than synthetic dyes. That said, some mordants used to fix the dye are not very toxic and when combined with an eco-friendly natural dye can produce nicely died fabrics. Do two separate dyebaths, one with salt and one with vinegar. This will probably be best for darkest colours.

Get Warmer Colours:add a small amount of brilliant yellow, tangerine orange, scarlet or cardinal red dye (example: add brilliant yellow to make magenta a true red). Main article: Tyrian purple Byzantine Emperor Justinian I clad in Tyrian purple, 6th-century mosaic at Basilica of San VitaleAccording to contemporary surveys in Europe and the United States, purple is the color most often associated with rarity, royalty, luxury, ambition, magic, mystery, piety and spirituality. [3] [4] When combined with pink, it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction. [5] Etymology and definitions Lanaset dyes are usually considerably more wash-fast and light-fast than most dyes available for use on wool. No other group of dyes that is suitable for hand dyeing is more permanent on wool. Unlike other acid dyes, Lanaset dyes are tested in hot water, at 140°F, conditions under which many acid dyes will wash out or bleed. The Purple Rain Protest was a protest against apartheid that took place in Cape Town, South Africa on 2 September 1989, in which a police water cannon with purple dye sprayed thousands of demonstrators. This led to the slogan The Purple Shall Govern. Chenciner, Robert (2000). Madder Red: A history of luxury and trade: plant dyes and pigments in world commerce and art.
