Will Ruth be able to juggle her personal and professional lives, and can Calladine deal with their new boss, a woman he neither trusts nor likes? Willing to do anything to bring terrible suffering to an end, Calladine make an astonishing move . . . Longer isn't always better but in an extended format a book tends to have more than a passing interest. I've previously read Dark Murder by Helen Durrant and my feelings about this one are a bit similar. Dead Wrong is a pretty standard police procedural but it never completely gripped me. It's the first book in the DI Tom Calladine and DS Ruth Bayliss series set in the North of England. This is the fourth book in the Calladine and Bayliss series. I've read and enjoyed the previous three, and this one was equally good. Tom Calladine is a single, fifty-one-year-old detective inspector who is devoted to his job. His personal life, however, is not so successful. Having been married and divorced before the age of twenty-one has set a pattern that he finds difficult to escape.

But this is Calladine and with Ruth Bayliss' help he will put the pieces together and get the bad guys, all of them. Once again Calladine and Bayliss are working together to discover the secrets held within the homeless camp and what, if any, connection is there to the old Chase Mill? With much worse to follow, nothing much to go on and personal issues getting in the way, Calladine was frustrated but determined to catch the maniac who was terrorizing Leesdon. But could he? Would they apprehend him before anyone else died? And what was the motive? It becomes a game of cat & mouse as police scramble for clues before the madman grabs another victim. I figured out who the killer was early on but the motivation for his spree wasn't clear 'til the end. A large group of homeless people have taken up residence on the grounds of an empty cotton mill. One of these people has secrets ... secrets that kill. And when one man goes missing, Calladine and Bayliss investigate. The start of a fabulous new series from Helen H. Durrant . . . Brilliant book — I loved it!’ Charlotte M.

Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel McLean, Joy Ellis, J.D. Kirk, Rachel Abbott, Elly Griffiths or J.M. Dalgliesh. Calladine is DI, married to the job. His first marriage broke down in the early stages as Rachel couldn't cope with coming second. He is now in a relationship with Monika who works at the Care Home where his Mother lives. However, he isn't committed to the relationship. He is a good detective but he always looks for things that don't appear to be there and his team find this annoying but what is more annoying is that he is usually right. This is the second book featuring DI Calladine and DS Bayliss. I haven't read the first book but I do think this can be happily read as a standalone novel. These people needed homes and it seemed ridiculous that a huge building like the Chase Mill was standing empty when people had nowhere to go. It could so easily be turned into flats.” But the owner of the property, Damien Chase wanted them off the property. DCI Alice Rossi of Greater Manchester’s Serious Crime Squad has served with the police for the past twenty-nine years. Since the death of her husband, Paul, six years ago, she has lived alone in a large, three-storey Edwardian terrace on the outskirts of Manchester. Her grown-up son lives in Edinburgh with his family. Alice is about to retire — but she’s not looking forward to it. Since her husband died, work has been her mainstay, not because she misses Paul — he was a bad man — but because it keeps her dark thoughts at bay.

But one of the men is not what he seems. He has a secret he will do anything to cover up. And once Calladine and Bayliss investigate, they find the crimes go much further than they could have ever imagined. Ruth Bayliss is in her mid-thirties, plain-speaking but loyal. She wishes she had more time for the gym and a love life. She uses her demanding workload as an excuse not to try too hard with the men she meets. As I mentioned above, figuring out the who and the where was easier for me than in some of the other books, but the why I struggled with more. We get a mention of some things that happened in the past, and we get a very unsatisfying reason - but I don't really feel like it made sense for the killer to make the jump that he did. I was also very annoyed with one of the couples mentioned that they didn't think something was worth reporting - perhaps had they done so this would have been wrapped up sooner. Dead Lost” is the fourth novel in the “Calladine and Bayliss” series, which was released in the year 2016. Horrific secrets are being held in an abandoned cotton mill. This is one of the toughest challenges that Calladine and Bayliss have ever faced in their careers. Some homeless people have begun living in a disused cotton mill’s grounds, one that belongs to a local businessman named Damien Chase. Day 2. Sixteen-year-old Maggie Hewson is reported missing. She never came home from school, and her father is beside himself.
