The paint, although exceptional, comes with a slight downside. It can only cover about 2m²/litre depending on the surface porosity and profile. When applied over a primer and on a similar colour, one coat may be sufficient, though. Icy is a very blue color with gray undertones. It is close to a sky blue color and one of the truest blues on this list. Pair it with creamy colors instead of whites or grays to keep it from looking too blue. Second, a dark blue is not going to be the most maintenance-friendly. It will show food stains like sauces or flour, unlike some other colors that can work to camouflage certain kitchen mishaps. It also shows fingerprints and dust easily. Another consideration is that, if damaged, a chip or ding in the cabinet face will clearly reveal the material beneath the dark paint. Upward is a clear and pure blue color. It doesn’t get muddy tones from the gray undertones but feels less bright because of them. It is a really cheerful color and would work well on walls in many rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blue ushers in a feeling of comfort and calm, which, let's face it, is exactly what you need in your kitchen. And while the cool hue won't necessarily take away the everyday stress that comes with whipping up weeknight dinners or perfecting holiday menus, the soul-soothing shade can certainly make it a more warm and inviting room to complete the task at hand (a win in our eyes). But since indigo, navy and azure (among other energizing kitchen paint colors) tend to overwhelm, start small with these blue kitchen cabinet idea s.

Paint the cabinets in the colour of your choice using a paintbrush or roller. The best technique is to paint the edges first and then all of the remaining space. Paint first the inside of the cabinets and then the outside, without neglecting the bottom of individual accessories, such as any fixed shelves. On the market, there are many furniture paints that claim they adhere perfectly and provide an exceptional coverage on un-primed surfaces. We’ve tested some of them and they did provide great results. However, we still recommend priming the surface for the simple reason that paint will need less maintenance and will resist longer. Very easy to use and coming in 42 attractive colours, Painter’s Touch by Rust-Oleum is one of the most versatile kitchen cupboard paints on the market – and our favourite. This multi-purpose paint is decorative and protective at the same time. A range of finishes gives you the possibility to choose from retro-gloss, satin or matt.As for contemporary designs, there are dozens of colour schemes to inspire your new look. Neutral tonalities are easy to mix and match in all décors. Darker greys, rust, copper, and dark browns are beautiful choices in an industrial style or contemporary kitchen. Pair them with natural stone or quartz countertops in matching shades for a touch of class. Next, you want to get paint samples. I suggest buying at least three paint samples if you want to paint walls. Paint them on your walls in at LEAST three different spots each.

Covering up to 14m²/litre, Chalky Finish can be applied on most surfaces without priming or sanding. However, if you’re painting a veneer or laminate profile, sanding and priming might be necessary. One coat is usually enough to achieve a smooth, flattering result, and the product is washable and easy to maintain. Ideal to apply in high-traffic areas, this paint is also tough and durable, resistant to scratches and stains. However, we found it easy to refurbish melamine kitchen cabinets with the Ronseal One Coat paint formulated specifically for melamine cupboards. Covering up to 8m²/litre, this paint is easy to apply and dries in about two hours. The sheen of paint is how shiny or dull it is. There is an entire spectrum (see below) ranging from completely matte to glossy, and everything between. I prefer a satin sheen because it’s the perfect balance of not too dull or too shiny. Shiny paint can appear plastic or fake, but something too matte won’t wear well over time against grease and oil.
