Ah yes, good point, I cud av swor I heard summat about a "summer solstice" soon, mustav been in my dream time ! Closure was inevitable after a decision to end peat harvesting in 2021, yet its demise is six to 12 months ahead of schedule.

If you have never experienced the magical smell that is given off from this type of fuel then you have never lived! The nearest petrol station to Temple Bar is probably the one on Usher's Quay, just around the corner from the Brazen Head pub. From a more scientific view point, burning peat is a low sulphur alternative to burning logs or coal and provides a superb heat output and a long lasting burn. They are made from peat which is milled, dried and then pressed under high pressure to make a solid rectangular briquette. Briquettes have been made here since the mid-19th century, though production ramped up to counter fuel shortages after the Second World War.

Hadley Bord na Móna premium peat briquettes are made from 100% naturally occurring vegetative fibre (bog peat) formed over hundreds of years, dried and pressed and into dense blocks ready for burning.

With their long, slow burn and lovely aroma, they’ll give you all the warmth you need in your hearth—no matter what type of fireplace or stove you have. Bord Na Mona Irish peat briquettes produce a long slow burn giving off lots of steady heat and a lovely aroma. We are fortunate to live in a mild region of England and have not needed to turn on the central heating for about 25years now, which not only has saved us a fortune on oil (no gas here) but has also reduced our carbon footprint considerably. Bord na Móna’s peat briquettes have a long burn time and a high heat output, and of course will create that homely feeling you can only get with the scent of burning real Irish peat. I didnt at that time know it was due to heavy decomposition, just thought it was wrong bog with wrong plants !Our peat briquettes are perfect for creating that homely feeling you can only get with the scent of burning real Irish peat. Peat briquettes will provide a long burn time of up to three hours, but can also be used in a closed appliance to keep a fire ‘in’ overnight or to rekindle a dying flame. They didn't live up the advertisement, found them difficult to light and they didn't give out the heat output I was expecting. We find that the briquettes burn very quickly so we build our fire with a mixture of briquettes and coal.

It takes centuries for a peat bog to regenerate not to mention the carbon dioxide dispatched on its not so merrily way. I had a very expensive disaster with peat ashes in a holiday rental on Achill during winter a number of years ago! Occasionally, deliveries can be taken onto the driveway if it is a flat concrete / tarmac surface with no gradient. Peat has traditionally been used to heat rural properties where it keeps providing heat long into the night.Other fuels cost less, but given the new restrictions just announced by the UK government on coal and non- kilndried wood, this is by far the best alternative. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.

I asked one of the Italians to find a receptacle for them and all he could locate was a large pyrex glass oven dish so I put the ashes into that and asked him to place it outside the kitchen door. Perhaps my memory is not serving me right but how would you guys compare the smell of burning turf and the smell of burning briquettes? Apart from the fact that they're quite heavy, briquettes are fuel and you may have difficulties with both airport security and customs. Yes, you will certainly need a metal bucket, and leave them long enough to completely cool before you dispose of them.

Hi, don't know where in the south west you reside but Irish sphagnum moss peat is available in Exeter, postage wouldn't be an option as it's a job to lift 100 litres. It has a nicer smell when burning and doesn't have that slightly chemical odour you get from briquettes when you handle them. These blocks put out a really good deal of heat and they burn for quite a long time, leaving very little residue behind. Can be mixed with wood or coal or used by themselves on Log and Coal fires, open stoves, fire pits, Chimineas, Burners and BBQ's. My (plastic) greenhouse got blown across the garden along with my geraniums and watercress (that's another story!
