Despite the extreme quality of the CD drive, Pioneer really don't want you to get stuck mid-set so should one of your disks decide it wants to stay inside the CDJ-400, you can poke it out from the belly of the beast with the supplied getthecdoutofthecdj tool, which slots very neatly on the underside of the unit.

With the turntables gone, I’m left with a laptop full of rare house tunes seemingly never to be mixed again. Firstly I should start by saying that I am not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I do know my way around a CDJ. You can plug in a hub (although not recommended by Pioneer) but will only ever be able to use a single device at a time in it. I say CBR because that's what the manual recommends, but I used VBR and experienced no issues at all. The CDJ-400 allows you to play your MP3 collection off CD-R/RW discs as well as music from mass storage USB devices, such as USB keys, external hard drives and portable media devices. The USB slot is a great feature though - I try not to get 'too' used to them though, as the 1000's which I use regularly don't have one. Pioneer designed them for home use, although they have made their way into professional settings before, sometimes being favoured by both club and mobile DJs. It's worth mentioning that while you're using effects, the jog wheel becomes the controller so pitch bend isn't possible. The wheel is just like a regular CDJ - the outer jog part is used for pitch bending and when vinyl mode is engaged, the top pressure sensitive plate becomes the scratch controller. You can also personalise the jog dial by removing the transparent plastic top plate (using the supplied mini-screwdriver) and replacing the standard jog sheet with a design of your own.Its range can be toggled through ±6, ±10, ±16 and ±100% (the latter strangely referred to as WIDE) using the Tempo button, although if you’re using MP3s the WIDE option isn’t available. The very obvious key feature of the CDJ-400 over the rest of the CDJ family is the ability to read USB media. This particular wah is nothing like the scratch Wah effect and is in fact a filter sweep effect, going from low pass to high pass as you turn the jog wheel. Despite being a vinyl lover and having resisted the lure of such small digital players, I have to say that the CDJ-400 is a whole lot of fun. CDs can work with 3000 files inside 2000 folders, whereas USB devices can take 30,000 files across 20,000 folders, which really is ridiculous amounts of music.
