Current trainees gave the programme a big thumbs up: "It's a well-planned scheme, and the work is meaningful.” Indeed, one told of drafting an article for a weekly publication, while another mentioned “writing something that ended up going to the partners,” and a third reported attending court with an associate and helping out on a pro bono project. We randomly choose people from that list. The firm does not ask us who we speak to and will not be told. As a law student on the precipice of entering the legal profession, it’s easy to feel like you’re about to plunge into shark-infested waters or amble innocently into a lion’s den, given the (often overblown) horror stories that stalk the hallways of universities. Irwin Mitchell’s trainees were keen to get the message across that their firm takes no such approach. “They talk a lot about the human touch,” one trainee mused, “so they have a real focus on people – I didn’t find it as intimidating as other firms.” strong specialist immigration. The norm is to spend time in four departments over two years (six months in each). Each stint is called a seat. At some firms you’ll do six four-month seats or some other more bespoke arrangement; at very small firms it’s likely that your training won’t be as structured. Trainees will sometimes repeat a seat in the firm's largest department or the one they hope to qualify into, especially during six-seat schemes. Every year the firm runs a winter vacation scheme (one week), a spring vacation scheme (two weeks) and two summer vacation schemes (two weeks each), which are open to anyone who is eligible to apply for a training contract – regardless of your degree discipline or the length of time since you graduated. We want to feel that candidates have chosen us for a particular reason. We don’t have the number of spaces to just say 'oh, we'll just take a punt on those five'." Burges Salmon runs winter (one week), spring (two weeks) and two summer (two weeks each) schemes across the year in their Bristol office. Excitingly, the firm has now launched a spring vacation scheme based in their Edinburgh office for those wanting to apply for an Edinburgh based training contract. The firm takes on just 50 candidates in total, spread out across the schemes, in an effort to closely mentor and give enough work to each attendee.

We are delighted to share all of the contents of our guide but in a brilliant e-guide, so no matter where you are, you have the ultimate resource to a career in law at your fingertips. The strongest applicants always manage to secure a clutch of offers, but don’t despair if you can’t secure a place – it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll never get a training contract. Try and build your CV up in other ways – say with voluntary work or other legal or commercial experience – and then have another stab at vac scheme applications. Even if you navigate the vac scheme obstacle course perfectly, don’t get complacent. You’ll still need to prepare well for training contract interviews. The final stage is the assessment centre which consists of a half-day spent at the firm. The day’s agenda consists of a presentation, interview and a commercial awareness exercise – all of which is assessed by a partner and a member of HR.Okay, so don’t be an idiot. That's obvious. But how can you impress? As one recruiter says, it’s all about “marketing yourself well.” Does that sound a little intimidating? It’s really not. After all, you marketed yourself well on paper when you sent your application form in; now you are just doing it in person. Asking well-timed questions and showing an interest is an easy way of doing this. Just remember, “seeking out work and raising your profile without pestering people is a fine line to walk.” It may be a fine line, but it's one worth treading, and being proactive is key, as this partner suggests: “If you get given a piece of work, think about what happens next. Think about that next stage in the transaction, and if you don’t know what it is then go and find out. You've got to show initiative.” Trainees must gain practical experience in at least three distinct areas of English law (with a recommended minimum of three months in each). In practice transactional and contentious experience is required. Some firms, who may be unable to provide the necessary experience, send trainees on courses or secondments to fulfil the requirement.
