While some are recurring characters, there are a handful of strong one-timers, all of whom keep the reader entertained throughout. It was a nice change and I especially loved the side storyline with DS Warwick's wife Beth, and the art gallery she runs and her futile quest to snag a Vermeer. Our Con from the first book, Faulkner is about to take revenge on her wife and wants her to end up penniless after getting divorced with Faulkner. And so, on the big day, the only thing that can - and does - disrupt their happy day comes in the form of William’s nemesis, Malcolm Faulkner. Archer uses his wonderful style to take the reader on this twisted journey, as they lose themselves in the strong narrative.

The second book in the William Warwick series continues on his career progression up the ranks of the London Metropolitan Police.Taking readers back to the glory days of the 1980s, this police procedural is sure to impress many, particularly those who have a great affinity for Archer's Clifton Chronicles. Characters’ interactions with one another and with the world around them offer the context that humanises them beyond their roles as lawbreakers or law enforcers.

Archer does well developing some of his secondary characters as well, who surely help enrich the story in many ways. I think you’ll find he’s just as impressive on dry land,’ said the commander, after the applause had died down. I sense that Jeffrey Archer had an outline for where this series would go and as readers we’re gradually being drawn further into the lives of the characters; William especially. With his strong ties to family and his workplace, Warwick's character develops throughout this piece and there are hints that he will have to branch out in the upcoming novel, as he is sure to take on a new role or two. I can’t tell you too much at the moment,’ said the Hawk, ‘but you will have only one purpose, and it won’t be to catch low-level dealers selling cannabis on the street to pot heads. The premise is, of course, very fantastic, with the squad focusing on the investigation of a drug lord while also tackling some unfinished business from the Art and Antiquities Squad. In the other continuing thread from the earlier book, Miles Faulkner, is now serving a suspended four year sentence for Art theft and fighting a divorce suit with his wife Christina.

But first, I wanted to let you know that the team will have a new DC added to its complement, who may even outshine our resident choirboy. Another adventure with William Warwick and I enjoyed Hidden in Plain Sight even more than the first book in the series.I like that it’s a simple linear format and the complexity comes from all of the detail and some context switching. The case proceeds and the jury is empanelled, leaving the courts to decide the fate of Faulkner once and for all. William and the rest of his squad have been tasked with finding a drug lord known only by his street moniker, Viper. Warwick's promotion brings a new member to the team, DC Paul Adaja, whose interest in getting things done helps pave the way to a successful addition to the team.
