Description

In one study, the effect of breed on longevity in the pet dog was analyzed using mortality data from 23,535 pet dogs. The data were obtained from North American veterinary teaching hospitals. The median age at death was determined for purebred and mixed-breed dogs of different body weights. Within each body weight category, the median age at death was lower for purebred dogs compared with mixed-breed dogs. The median age at death was "8.5 years for all mixed breed dogs, and 6.7 years for all pure breed dogs" in the study. [25]

There are many other generic slang terms that have become popular in recent years like “doggo” though these are not nearly as widely used and limited to the younger generations. In 2013, a study found that mixed breeds live on average 1.2 years longer than purebreds, and that increasing body weight was negatively correlated with longevity (i.e. the heavier the dog, the shorter its lifespan). [26] Another study published in 2019 confirmed this 1.2 year difference in lifespan for mixed-breed dogs, and further demonstrated negative impacts of recent inbreeding and benefits of occasional outcrossing for lifespan in individual dogs. Bitzer and Shaun would grow up together, forming a tight bond of friendship, but Bitzer would always see the Farmer the one true authority, as well as a loving caretaker.

Determining ancestry [ edit ] This Golden Retriever/ German Shepherd mix dog has more average mongrel traits than of either parents' breed. Like most dogs, Bitzer deeply enjoys bones, and considers chewing on one an outright meal. He is easily distracted by any bone he may see, and is prone to abandoning his duties to enjoy one. The sheep take him into the barn, and attempt to transform him into the epitome of porcine sophistication, but do they really know who they have invited into their home?Studies that have been done in the area of health show that mixed-breeds on average are both healthier and longer-lived than their purebred relations. This is because current accepted breeding practices within the pedigreed dog community result in a reduction in genetic diversity, and can result in physical characteristics that lead to health issues. [28] Shaun comes across a discarded jigsaw puzzle, which he and the others proceed to work on. However, there is a missing piece, and it just happens to be on the farmer's trousers. The theory of hybrid vigor suggests that as a group, dogs of varied ancestry will be generally healthier than their purebred counterparts. In purebred dogs, intentionally breeding dogs of very similar appearance over several generations produces animals that carry many of the same alleles, some of which are detrimental. If the founding population for the breed was small, then the genetic diversity of that particular breed may be small for quite some time. Note: This episode was not aired in the UK, due to its use of graffiti. However, it was released on the Shaun the Sheep: Spring Cleaning DVD on 7 April 2014 in the same country. Iconic Item: His blue-knit hat which the Farmer gave to him as a puppy. In the Season 2 episode "Bitzer's New Hat", he is left completely despondent when the Farmer throws his hat in the trash and instead gives Bitzer a hideous new one given to him by his young niece.
